For my birthday today… I deleted the Facebook account I created in September to access Marketplace. It served its purpose. I was going to sell other things but never got around to it. Then friends started requesting to be friends. It was awkward. I didn’t accept any requests and even made one post on my profile that I wouldn’t be friending anyone.. that it was only for Marketplace. People still requested…

Then a colleague/friend passed away and I missed an RSVP because someone sent me the message on FB rather than real life even though we weren’t FB connected and hadn’t communicated on there for years. This is what happens when people treat FB like the entirety of “the internet” and “communication”. I have a website with my name and phone! My address is not hard to search. Email!?

I was angry and sad about that. 😢

So ya… if I do the Marketplace thing again I’ll just make a temp account and delete it after use, like a single use plastic bag to pick up dog poop. 💩 🤣

In the meantime I’ll keep focusing on good people here on the #opensocialweb… and also connecting with people in real life.

Most of the 48 years I have spent on this earth have been without Facebook. I’ll manage :)

Remember a few weeks ago I made a Facebook account with the intent of only using it for Marketplace because there are no good options around here for selling stuff.

I can happily report that zuck has not sucked me into his algorithm! But that doesn't mean I haven’t noticed his algorithm at work.

I happened to tap the 'home' button yesterday.

holy ____ am I glad to be on Mastodon/Fediverse. And god we are so ____ as long as billions of people are exposed to that place.

And just to be clear... my only activity on there is through Marketplace. I don't have any friends, no groups, nothing else that I think would impact the algorithm. So as far as I know, I'm a virgin user to FB's algorithm. And that's what I got.

I have an admission to make.
I made a Facebook account. 😭😬

Before you draw and quarter me, please understand this is out of pure desperation/necessity. lol.

Our town only buys/sells things on Marketplace. I don’t want to keep bugging my spouse every time I need to sell something (which isn't very often thankfully) or want to look for some random used thing.

The final straw was having to sell our son's car now that he has moved away.

My punishment: even though I pinned a post on my FB profile saying I am only using it for Marketplace and won't be accepting any Friend requests and that everyone should definitely check out the Free and Open web at socialbc.ca… now I am getting friend requests and feel slightly guilty.

I don't want to confirm them, obviously, but also don't want to delete them because that seems rude.

God I hate how FB has monopolized this stuff!

On the bright side, someone is coming to buy the car today!

Is “poking" still a thing on Facebook?

There was a person who I only sort of knew through association back in the old days when I first got on Facebook... we used to exchange “pokes" regularly.

And every time I think about that, it gets more and more creepy.

I just need to take a moment to say how much I appreciate the mixture of news, people, life, silliness... of my Mastodon timeline.

There are very few posts that turn me off. It's my feed. I feel in complete control of it.

I can't imagine giving up this control again.

I know the (social media) world will heal itself now that Facebook temporarily bans the accounts of people like my Father in Law who posts nothing but family related things. Apparently he logged on today to a lock-out notice.

He spent hours getting it unlocked.

Most people would probably just create a new account.

These late-stage capitalists are dumb.
