Having lost the battle, Queen Mary gave up her attempt to reach Dumbarton Castle and its offer of an escape by sea, and fled south to England instead, a choice which would eventually lead to her death.

Dumbarton Rock, a 330 million year old volcanic plug on the northern edge of the Clyde to the west of Glasgow that is home to Dumbarton Castle. A military stronghold for many centuries, it was to here that Mary, Queen of Scots was heading after her escape from Lochleven Castle in 1568 when she was intercepted by the Earl of Moray and was forced to fight the Battle of Langside (now on the Southside of Glasgow).

Dumbarton Rock on the Forth of Clyde, with Port Glasgow in the distance. Before work began in the late 18th Century to deepen the Clyde, ships had to unload their goods in Port Glasgow, and they would be transported the 20 miles into the city itself by horse-drawn carts.

Magnificent Dumbarton Castle, built on and around the 240ft high twin-peaked Dumbarton Rock overlooking the River Clyde, a place that may have been fortified since before the Romans left Britain. More pics and info: https://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/dumbarton/dumbartoncastle/index.html

This morning looking across the Firth of Clyde to Dumbarton Rock. It's the remains of an extinct volcano dating from over 300 million years ago. The buildings you can see on it today are part of Dumbarton Castle whose history can be traced back at least 1,500 years, making it the oldest fortress in Scotland to still be in existence today.

The remains of Carman Hill Fort (probably dating from the iron age some two to three thousand years ago) overlooking the Firth of Clyde from Carman Muir near Renton.
As is typical of iron hill forts, the sites of several other similar hill forts are visible from this location, including Dumbarton Rock, which can be seen in the distance. Incidently, the Dum in Dumbarton comes from dùn, which Gaelic for fort.

A ship passing the remains of the Lang Dyke opposite Dumbarton Rock as it heads down the Clyde from Glasgow and out to sea.
This is impressive bit of engineering was built by John Golborne in the 1770s as part of efforts to create a deep water channel all the way up to Glasgow. It still helps keep the channel open to shipping to this day.
