Drought conditions improved in large areas this week across southern states from Texas to Florida and across Plains states from Oklahoma to South Dakota. Drought intensified in northern Minnesota, in smaller areas of eastern states from North Carolina to Connecticut, and in smaller patches west of the Mississippi.

For all 50 U.S. states and Puerto Rico, the U.S. Drought Monitor showed 46.93 percent of the area in moderate drought or worse, compared with 48.78 percent a week earlier.

“This has been a drought hit area for several years, typical creeks that run in the winter have not run in over 5 years. The danger of fire is very high. We ranch on about 28,000 acres and have some irrigated pasture. The heat this spring was very critical in elevating the drought and fire risks.”

The Southeast has gotten a few rounds of rain over the past few weeks, bringing some much-needed relief. Despite widespread improvements, significant long-term drought remains in the region. A surplus of moisture will need to continue for lake and groundwater levels to recharge.
