Drama Queen (the manga) is now 40 chapters in and I’m glad I didn’t immediately drop it. The art is clearly inspired by Tatsuki Fujimoto (author of Chainsaw Man, Fire Punch) and that’s what initially drew me in.

The plot started out all over the place. And I remember the discussions I had with other people on Fedi debating if the author was xenophobic or not. After reading this thing weekly for a whole year now, I am pretty sure that is not the intention of the author. The main characters are shitty people and it is VERY clear that they are meant to be understood that way.

The first few chapters were confusing for me and I wasn’t really sure what to expect. But as he’s had time to write the story more, the writing has improved dramatically (pun intended). There is an element of mystery to it, there are some very wild and chaotic scenes, and the last few months worth of chapters have been diving into backstories of various side characters, and I have really enjoyed the storytelling. The only character so far I really don’t understand is the protagonist Nomamoto. She seems to just be a racist shithead just to be a racist shithead. Which I think is fine story wise. I suspect the intention of the story is for the deuteragonist Kitami to have actual character development and start realizing how much of a total piece of shit he is, while Nomamoto will just get progressively worse.

The backstory of the most recent chapters is connecting a lot of the plot lines in ways I really didn’t anticipate but now that I know I can see it.

I don’t think this manga is for everyone, but I plan on continuing to read it. I will allow some more time to “let him cook”, so to speak.

The intention of the author is very unclear especially at the beginning, so if anyone else has read it recently and has other ideas about it I’d be happy to discuss with anyone! #manga #DramaQueen
