Dragon Age 2 lead wanted players to have strong opinions about every character in the RPG: "If some people are ambivalent […] I guess I didn't really do my job"

Dragon Age co-creator David Gaider got the job done

I dunno why but it always made me feel at ease when Neve was in my party and I'd hear the clank of her metal leg whenever we moved.

Dragon Age 2, David Gaider voleva compagni capaci di dividere davvero i fan

God I hate Blackwall as a character in Dragon Age. Not that he's completely poorly written (I just have criticism of how his entire lie is an Idiot Plot), but that he's a terrible fucking person and I hate him.

In my first DAI playthrough, I romanced Blackwall blind. And when the lies came out about who he really is, what he actually did, my qunari girl lost it with rage.

The bastard had the gall to confess to his lies RIGHT AFTER they had sex for the first time. Right after. Had to get his dick wet before leaving, I guess. Their ENTIRE relationship was based on a series of lies that included HIS VERY FUCKING IDENTITY. That Inquisitor of mine considered that rape by deception. On a basic level of definitions, that's what that is. She would not have consented if she'd known. And this isn't even getting into the more subtle psychological abuse that comes with having to constantly manage your lies so your partner doesn't see the truth.

She let Orlais execute him. I always let Orlais execute him.

His entire lie working for as long as it did depends on everyone around him suddenly taking stupid pills. This trope is apparently called an Idiot Plot. His lying, in retrospect, is completely obvious in his opening scene. A real Grey Warden would NEVER let conscripts go. That's not how Grey Wardens work, especially not a supposed "recruiter." I remember briefly thinking that was odd in my first playthrough, but dismissing it as "the writers forgot where the lore bible is again."

All of a sudden, no one can spot a liar. Bull was specifically trained in detecting liars. Leliana has the skill too, and her canonical excuse for missing it was that she was blinded by the grandeur of the Wardens. To a lesser extent, Varric has the same skill. The only NPC that gets close to unveiling his lies is Dorian, someone raised by liars, but he doesn't push it far enough.

You as the Inquisitor, whose job title means "one who finds answers to questions," should have been able to suss out *completely* that Blackwall was lying, but the game only lets you ask a few questions of him and watch him squirm without answering. You should have been able to pursue it further like a real mystery story and have the choice to expel him before he steals the dignity of confessing to it himself.

And before anyone asks, yes I also have very similar opinions of Solas. My Solasmancer called him an asshole to his face.

Shameless self-promotion Sunday!

I'm working on some new stories featuring my Veilguard Rook, Alana de Riva, but until then my existing fanfics are available to read on AO3.

● The Copy-Crow Case - Emmrich and Alana catch a killer who's wearing Alana's face 🗡

● Sparring Partners - gently spicy sapphic moments with Alana and Neve Gallus 💕

● Enter the Alanaverse - multiversal madness with six variants of Alana! ✨️

Edit: updated to actually include the link, oops! https://archiveofourown.org/users/therivercrow/
