In the late 1970's my mother would sometimes take me to visit my #Mormor in #Sweden. As Sweden only subtitled shows we would watch English language TV when they came on #SVT. One of them was #AlfredHitchcock Presents. A show that was stopped being made in 1965*. I am grateful that I was able to enjoy this show that I would of missed if I only ever live in the #USA.

So, think of this #Trump #Tarrif as just getting your children into #DowntonAbbey now.

I’m rewatching #DowntonAbbey, and thinking about why I like it’s despite basically disagreeing with creator Julian Fellowes’ whole lifelong political-artistic conservative project. I also just read #VictoriaGoddard ‘s #HandsoftheEmperor series, #LoisMcMasterBujold’s #VorkosiganSaga, and have been watching a lot of #StarTrek, and realized what they all have in common: reciprocity. They’re reciprocity porn, and ideas of fealty, loyalty, connection, obviously appeal right now.

Since today is the anniversary of the Titanic sinking, it is also the day on which Downton Abbey begins.

The newspaper arrives, is pressed (!) and taken upstairs, where the family learns over breakfast of the tragedy and the deaths at sea of the two male heirs to Downton Abbey. That set the stage for everything that followed.
