Over the weekend I have been rereading ’Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass’ (1845)and much of what he says and records about slavery in C19 USA runs true in todays societies.
For those without a hard copy, the book is available here - not a long read but a harrowing one. And one for our times.

and a short account of the facts around this man can be read here

#Douglass did say some words, but they weren't an apology.
He says he is “deeply sorry for the offense” which is not quite the same thing as being sorry for his actions.
He minimizes what he did, saying his comment “was an unflattering remark about a specific individual, absolutely not a generalization.”
He complains about the "hate" that he's been subjected to because of his actions.
No one should be fooled. They're #Nazis and this is damage control.
Adam Serwer on the 14th Amendment. #Trump and the #GOP want us to be like Andrew Johnson. We should be like Frederick #Douglass.
"...President Andrew Johnson complained that the 1866 Civil Rights Act, parts of which were later adopted in the Fourteenth Amendment, extended citizenship to “the Chinese of the Pacific States” and “the people called Gypsies, as well as the entire race designated as blacks, people of color, negroes, mulattoes, and persons of African blood.” Yes, and that was the point. “A liberal and brotherly welcome to all who are likely to come to the United States, is the only wise policy which this nation can adopt,” Frederick Douglass declared in 1869. “It would be madness to set up any one race above another, or one religion above another, or proscribe any on account of race color or creed.”
