BBC Wales is asking if Britain has become "too dog-friendly". At the same time, we're hearing politicians complain that platforms like X are a "massive problem" because people can get their views heard widely and quickly.
That should ring alarm bells.
Dogs are part of normal family and community life for millions of people. Free expression on open platforms should also be normal in a democracy. But more and more, ordinary culture and ordinary speech are being framed as problems to be managed.
This is how shifts happen. Not all at once, but gradually, through framing, edge cases, and repeated nudges about what you're supposed to see as acceptable.
Look past the surface. Ask who is pushing the narrative, why they are pushing it, and whose interests it serves.
What "new normal" do you think people are being softened up for?
