cw: spoilers
"Doctor Slump" is in many ways a formulaic romance, but I found it heartwarming and extremely compelling. ML Yeo Jeong-woo (Park Hyung-sik) is a dashing young plastic surgeon at the top of his game. His "NeoTube" channel has millions of subscribers, and he has opened up clinics across Korea. Jeong-woo has boyish good looks, and a cute - if conceited - personality. I thought 'he's probably a k-pop idol', and indeed he was a member of boy band ZE:A.

Day 14: A Therapy Drama
Doctor Slump - Ah, I get warm and fuzzy just thinking about this one. It was exactly what I needed when I watched it; soo healing.
(The PHS PSH chemistry is off the charts
).
Verkar vara k-drama-binge som gäller den här ledigheten. Doctor Slump: bra skit, om man är på det humöret
Day 26: most disappointing of 2024
I pick 2
#DoctorSlump and #AVirtuousBusiness. Both had good premises but I was bored after a few eps.
For me, the event that becomes the trigger for the ML's problems ends up being just that. It was such an interesting mystery & it went nowhere - just a plot device that was never woven back in.
Also, the depiction of depression was superficial. I could have forgiven that because what can you do in a few episodes, but it barely interfered in their relationship. Both people going through their own difficult times & also trying to forge a relationship should have gone through a lot more trouble.
I think it was done to show depression & to destigmatize therapy & taking meds & to give people hope, which I think it accomplished, but because it tried to keep things light, it felt shallow to me. Also, much of the comedy felt forced when I know both leads are good at comedy.
Also, I was really disappointed in the Netflix subtitles. They are always worse than Viki, but they missed entire sentences.
And the sound quality was not great either.
Compared to other Netflix kDramas, this felt neglected.

Doctor Slump
(2024 - Netflix, 16 1:05 eps)
High expectations resulted in disappointment. A very bland mystery could have either been finished quickly or gone crazy. The ML's parents were mentioned briefly, but that went nowhere. The writing was not well done.
Park Hyung Sik wasn't playing a character - it was just him - so some deep emotional scenes felt out of place. The chemistry was lacking. The FL's brother stole the show with his acting - he was terrific! And the 2nd couple was great.
It was a mental health service message: although the show didn't portray depression completely accurately, I felt the uplifting message of "It's okay to fail. You can try again." is a good one.
It's a cute, positive show in many ways. If you're looking for fluff, it's a nice, mostly-calm, watch. If you're expecting award-caliber stuff, you will be disappointed.

As the plot unraveled it didn't keep the excitement promised in first episodes. It could have been so much better!
The talented cast made it worth watching though. Jeong-woo (Park Hyung-sik) mood swings were hilarious and totally addictive. Ha-neul (Park Shin-hye) healing journey was brilliantly interpreted and the supporting cast nailed the frequent comedy scenes too.
Excellent acting and directing, deceiving screen-writing.
