“And that means that any cut in taxes would show up not in a lower price at the pump, but in a higher price paid to distributors. In other words, the benefits of the tax cut would flow not to consumers but to other parties, mainly the domestic oil refining industry.”

’How do we help those in need when fuel costs increase, while addressing EU’s need for reducing fossil fuel use?’ That was the core question in last week’s conference about implementing the Social Climate Fund. Since then, I have been reflecting that while the Social Climate Fund – and the accompanying Social Climate Plans, to made by the EU member states – is motivated by the ETS2 taxation of fuel for road transport and heating from 2028, the challenges are exactly the same in the current energy crunch. Good thing is that even though most member states still are in the process finalizing their Social Climate Plans for approval by the EU Commission, they have in their work been considering questions such as these: - What types of demand will mainly be hit in our country? - How can we narrow in on who will be hit hardest, due to income and/or lack of viable alternatives? - How do we ensure that our initiatives are focused on those in need and not just on those that are most vocal? - How can we at the same time address not only cost increase, but energy/mobility poverty more broadly? I therefore sincerely hope that all EU member states, before considering e.g. fuel subsidies, will instead use and fast-track implementation of the work already done in preparing the Social Climate Plans. This would both be more socially fair and safeguard incentives to reduce fuel use, to the benefit of both climate and energy independence. #dktrp #dkgreen #dkpol #SocialClimateFund
