I'm in the process of storage optimization in my #homelab because I have some drives currently underutilized.
For example, my #DIYNAS has a 2TB mirrored ZFS pool as a boot disk. I have no reason for a mirror, and it also looks like this pool is underperforming because it is connected through a cheap SATA extension controller. I'm planning to replace that pool with a single NVMe drive.
Two freed SSD drives could become an S3 storage for my #selfhosted #Mastodon instance using #Garage
I'm back to a three-node #Proxmox cluster. With replications and high availability configured, this setup is my favorite because I can turn off my power-hungry #DIYNAS and my critical #homelab services will still be online, distributed among the rest of the nodes. Also, this cluster will survive a random single-node failure, so I'll be less worried about the #homelab while away.
Price is an additional 10-15 watts of power consumption.
This thing is so cool from the inside. I want to leave it like this every time I open it.
This is my #DIY #NAS I built in #Jonsbo N1 case. #TrueNas in the past, #Proxmox for now.
4 HDDs and 2 SSDs. 64 GB of RAM and 12-core Intel i5.
One thing I don’t like is a PCIe SAS controller in the bottom that is huge and gets very hot. It’s there because the motherboard had only 4 SATA ports. I want to replace that controller with something smaller and cooler.

Building a Compact and Efficient DIY NAS for 2026
In this article, Brian Moses shares his latest DIY NAS build for 2026, focusing on a compact 8-bay server with modern components like the Intel N355 CPU and 32GB DDR5 RAM. He discusses the criteria for his build, such as a small form factor, low power consumption, and homelab potential. The build in... [More info]
Building a Compact and Efficient DIY NAS for 2026
Brian’s compact NAS build is impressive—balancing size, performance, and efficiency isn’t easy. Love the detailed assembly and testing insights. TrueNAS choice makes sense for reliability, though the case quirks seem tricky. Thoughtful planning is key!
