Republican Gov. #MikeKehoe signed a bill into law on Tuesday to change that. While state law currently allows pregnant women to file for divorce, a 1970s-era law still on the books discourages courts from approving divorces before the baby is born so that child support and custody can be decided at the same time. At the time, supporters hailed the law because they thought it would force men to be financially responsible for the child. Missouri House Bill 1908 prevents courts from denying a divorce simply because a woman is pregnant. The bill passed unanimously in the state House last month and 29-0 (with 5 voting present) in the state Senate on March 10. Support for the bill gained momentum after Republican State Rep. Cecelie Williams, one of the bill’s sponsors, shared her personal story of not being able to get divorced from her abuser while pregnant. Speaking at the bill signing she called the bill’s passage her “Independence Day.” Proponents of the new law argue that it will protect domestic violence victims, allowing them to get out of dangerous marriages regardless of their pregnancy status. The new law will go into effect on August 28, 2026. Follow @therecount for more.
