RDNNocturnal is not so nocturnal, nor diurnal so diurnal: almost 9 million camera trap observations indicate that less than half of 445 mammal species adhere to the diel activity pattern that is conventionally ascribed to them.
Species with a wider geographic distribution tend to be nocturnal, and smaller species tend to be nocturnal, except in the forested tropics.

C.We're a week into April here on the Canadian prairies [1], but it's a little different than other places. Spring isn't here, it's on the horizon. Everything's still got a blanket of snow on it, and we could easily get more [2]. There's no blooms or buds to tell you spring is on the way.
There are really only two big clues that Old Man Winter is thinking about leaving:
1. Days are noticeably longer than just a few weeks ago.
2. The jackrabbits!
They're turning brown again, losing their winter-white coat. Unfortunately it's kind of ruining their camouflage.
I find it interesting that the degree or progression of the change is so different between different individuals. I'm told the change is triggered by the lengthening days, so it's some sort of built-in variance.
These are white-tailed jackrabbits, which are actually a species of hare, not rabbit. They're the most common hare on the Canadian prairies, shown here in my backyard.
[1] It's probably a week into April where you are, too. Funny how that works.
[2] In the time I've lived in Saskatchewan, I have seen snow fall in every month of the calendar except July.

Frogs display a remarkable diversity of species as a whole, but does the same hold true for their visual abilities? A new study led by York University's Faculty of Science has sought to answer this question by collaborating with researchers in Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Cameroon, Ecuador, Equatorial Guinea, French Guiana, Gabon, Seychelles, Sweden, United Kingdom and the United States, to get a sample of a diverse array of frogs to study the visual pigments found in their eyes.
