Imagine if the #fcc #notam warning network ran on distributed #Fediverse services…
This also isn't centralized industrial networking's first wake up call 😅

There is clearly an opportunity to build a better future, one that commits to digital spaces that enhance our social and civic life; one that gives communities control over where and how they come together online.

At iDPI we’re agitating for a smaller future of the Internet. To illustrate this, it’s helpful to think about rooms. Offline, there are all sorts of rooms that we gather in: there are churches, bars, gyms—what we do in each of those is pretty different. Facebook is like a big conference center, with high ceilings,… Continue reading Welcome to Smalltown, a Civic Space Online
@jcast every now and then the notion gets floated to replace #foodbanks with debit cards, granting the dignity of self-choice to recipients. 'Efficient' is considered a local thing.
This kind of reminds me of the reasons for the #Fediverse, by largely gifting #distributedchoice, it is better able to adapt to local conditions 🙂
Whether that enhances conversation or not remains to be seen...
@ummjackson I envisage a semi-decentralized, hierarchies of localized authority feeding up and vetted on the way to the national brand. Think "Metro Media's holdings" as a federation of news media instead of an empire.
Since #scaleistheproblem I expect this push to #distributedchoice is inevitable.
Bits are needed, though, distributed identity for one, and the nature of trust will favour an opensource core (with local extensions)
This mini-rant about distributed perceptions strikes me as an good endorsement for the #Fediverse, letting people be who they are where they are, and granted #distributedchoice. #thefutureislocal

The idea that society is ordered from the top-down originated from Thomas Hobbes’ seminal 1651 book, Leviathan. And this idea still resonates strongly today: we agree to a social contract in which we give up some of our freedoms to the state, in the hope that it will ensure order and our protection. Yet here, Gary A. Fine discusses why Hobbes was mistaken to think that order must be built vertically, and instead asserts that we should look to our local groups and communities to order society, and drive us towards a more just world.
