Italian News by RSSIl Tempo: Di Maio (Aiom): "No disparità su biopsia liquida in cancro seno metastatico"
Roma, 19 mag. (Adnkronos Salute) - "Oggi, per fortuna, possiamo contare su tanti progressi scientifici che possono tradursi in opportunità diagnostiche e terapeutiche per i pazienti. Però è importante che questa innovazione sia resa disponibile in maniera equa e tempestiva per tutti quelli che ne hanno bisogno. Purtroppo, al momento esiste un rischio di disparità anche all'interno del nostro Paese, per le differenze nelle possibilità di accesso tra varie realtà locali e regioni". Lo ha detto Massimo Di Maio, presidente Aiom - Associazione italiana di oncologia medica, intervenendo oggi a Milano all'incontro dedicato alla medicina di precisione nel tumore al seno metastatico ormonoresponsivo/Her2 negativo e all'accesso alla biopsia liquida.
Secondo il presidente di Aiom, oggi "la differenza non è soltanto nell'accesso al farmaco, ma anche nell'accesso al test diagnostico", indispensabile "per selezionare correttamente i pazienti che possono beneficiare di un certo trattamento. In questo contesto - osserva - non avere a disposizione un test diagnostico, tra cui per esempio la biopsia liquida, potrebbe compromettere un accesso equo e tempestivo ai migliori trattamenti disponibili. Questo test - spiega - è un esame che consente di indagare il Dna del tumore attraverso il sangue. Si tratta quindi di un esame meno invasivo per il paziente, perché consiste in un semplice prelievo ematico e non necessariamente del prelievo del tessuto tumorale, che in alcuni casi può essere complesso".
Questo strumento diagnostico, precisa Di Maio, "consente di fotografare le caratteristiche della malattia anche in momenti diversi della sua storia clinica, quando la biologia del tumore può cambiare in risposta ai trattamenti ricevuti". Oggi la biopsia liquida rappresenta "un esame standard in molte situazioni cliniche" e permette di "garantire una diagnostica moderna, capace di selezionare correttamente i pazienti che possono beneficiare di specifici trattamenti".

However, it is important that this innovation is made available in a fair and timely manner for all those who need it. Unfortunately, there is currently a risk of disparities even within our country, due to differences in access possibilities between various local realities and regions.” This was said by Massimo Di Maio, president of Aiom - Italian Association of Medical Oncology, speaking today in Milan at the meeting dedicated to precision medicine in hormone-responsive/Her2-negative metastatic breast cancer and access to liquid biopsy.
According to the Aiom president, today “the difference is not only in access to the drug, but also in access to the diagnostic test,” which is essential “to correctly select patients who can benefit from a certain treatment. In this context – he observes – not having a diagnostic test available, such as the liquid biopsy, could compromise fair and timely access to the best available treatments. This test – he explains – is an examination that allows us to investigate the tumor’s DNA through the blood. It is therefore a less invasive examination for the patient, as it consists of a simple blood draw and not necessarily of the tissue tumor sample, which in some cases can be complex.”
This diagnostic tool, Di Maio specifies, “allows us to photograph the characteristics of the disease at different times in its clinical history, when the biology of the tumor can change in response to the treatments received.” Today, the liquid biopsy represents “a standard examination in many clinical situations” and allows us to “ensure a modern diagnostic, capable of correctly selecting patients who can benefit from specific treatments.”
