this, relevant also for digital preservation #digpres

If you want to create completely free software for other people to use, the absolute best delivery mechanism right now is static HTML and JavaScript served from a free web host with an established reputation. Here's why I think that in more detail: https://simonwillison.net/2025/Apr/28/give-it-away-for-free/

Found one:
@micr0 wrote a great tool:

- cloned: https://codeberg.org/antifascistDH/scrape-up

Also via Zotero Connector:

Does anyone know if it's possible to bulk-download stuff from academia.edu and researchgate.com?
(I'm talking about stuff uploaded by *other* people, not me)

An update re academia.edu: @[email protected] wrote a great tool for bulk-downloading of papers: https://github.com/micr0-dev/academia-preserver clone: https://codeberg.org/antifascistDH/academia-preserver You only need to provide keywords.

I'm once again asking people, especially those who host their research data and/or work on US-servers or with US-based services:
Please backup your data on repositories, mirror your repos and save copies!

One quick and reliable way: https://zenodo.org

My point is: We need to act quickly.
Yes, pay @Codeberg et al., but that shouldn't paralyze you to act.

Zenodo

After just having done so (with consent):
Dear #Scientists of all fields - if you use #GitHub to host your research software, please mirror your repos to alternatives like @Codeberg, @swheritage or repositories like zenodo (also data).
Its very easy: https://docs.codeberg.org/advanced/migrating-repos/

No one knows if and when Microsoft/GitHub will go the route of Meta etc. pp.
Better be prepared now #DigitalPreservation #DigPres

Or at least consent to me forking your repos

@mkj also: There is a whole community about this question #digpres

@threatresearch

Vivement #demain!

To close the Lightning Talks session at #ipres2024, Kenneth Seals-Nutt discusses (in his full paper) creating a chatbot tailored to #digpres trained on Wikidata. They used a combo of responses from LLMs and data from Knowledge Graphs to check that they could trace the movement from docs to data and whether they can retrace their steps from factually accurate information to source documents.

Interested? A follow-on of their presentation will be discussed at their Birds of a Feather discussion.

Excited to be attending #ipres2024 today in Ghent, Belgium – the largest iteration of the Digital Preservation conference to date! #digpres
@edsu @anj that kind of stuff used to be near religious. and, while I care enormously about it, I am very close to totally withdrawing from discussions because it has become political only. PR machinery in overdrive. definitely in #scholcomm but also in #digpres, so it seems.
