While thinking about what to do after my current contract ends, I keep coming back to the fact that I'd really like a EU-based alternative for lets encrypt. Don't get me wrong, let's encrypt is fantastic, but it's US based and thus subject to US laws, which might pose a problem for the continuity of the usage of their services outside of the US.

Let's say I were to start a project to do this, write a plan, get initial funding, maybe a few (paid) people to help out with this, would there be interest? Would it be worth it?

Would you want to use it? Could you even think of donating, or maybe know of some companies or organisations who would be inclined to go into a sponsorship relation?

I think it might be very welcome, and it is worth trying, but I'd like a reality check please :)

According to Germany's Ministry of the Interior, if you store your data in an European company, withing European DCs, etc, but some of the links of the chain is owned by an US company, then it's within the reach of US laws:

Interesting days. I’m actively switching from big tech to #EuropeanAlternatives and #FOSS solutions - wherever possible. Since I can’t do this fully in my work life, I’ve requested a separate work phone for the first time. It might be inconvenient, but that’s part of the experience: I want to understand the real challenges of living without Google and Microsoft. My personal phone is already as 'de-Googled' as I could make it. No MS either. The next is my family. #Privacy #DigitalSovereign

Trending now: More and more people publicly explain how annoyed they are by #AI #KI #LLM #enshitification. Get rid of that and speed up your work again: We need a product label for products WITHOUT AI. Here's a logo I crafted with #gimp #opensource #linux #digitalsovereign not "#cloudsovereign or other BS. Use it as you like, it's an official traffic sign in Germany (obviously without the letters).
I suggest this for a quality badge, but someone can create a nicer looking one!
