911 calls reveal pain, despair at ICE'S largest detention camp

The calls to 911 poured in from staff at Camp East Montana, the nation's largest U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facility, in its first months of operation in El Paso, Texas. The emergencies included repeated suicide attempts by detainees, seizures, injuries from fights and a pregnant woman in pain. Data from more than a hundred 911 calls obtained by The Associated Press, interviews with detainees and court filings offer a portrait of overcrowding, medical neglect, malnutrition and emotional distress. A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson rejected claims of subprime conditions, saying detainees receive food, water and medical treatment in a facility that's regularly cleaned.

How a Tiny, Inexperienced Firm Landed a $1.3 Billion #Detention Deal To hold 5,000 human beings.

by Samantha Michaels, November+December 2025 Issue

Excerpt: "When the Trump administration awarded a $1.26 billion contract this summer to build and operate a new tent city #detention center in #Texas, it made headlines, and not just because the facility, located at the #FortBliss Army base, was expected to be the biggest of its kind in the country. The company that won the job, #AcquisitionLogistics, was so small it operated out of a single-family home in #RichmondVA. Almost nobody had heard of it. 'A random house…just won $1.26 billion from #ICE,' wrote the New Republic.

"Whereas many companies with ICE contracts had long histories with immigrant detention, including private prison giants such as GEO Group, Acquisition Logistics had no prior experience in incarceration. Previously, its biggest federal contract was $16 million, and CEO #KenWagner is circling retirement at 77. Over the summer, the company’s website was inaccessible to the public, with the header 'Site maintenance in progress.' Archived screenshots showed the firm specializes in supply chain management. Could it safely operate a 5,000-bed detention facility?"

A ‘Shameful’ Legacy: #Texas Has Officially Opened an #ICE #DetentionFacility at Site of #WWII #InternmentCamp

#CampEastMontana is now the largest #immigrant detention facility in U.S. history, but it’s just one of 19 sites that will add a total of 37,649 new beds for ICE detainment — a 105% increase in the state’s capacity.

by Leslie Rangel August 18, 2025

Excerpt: "In #ElPaso on Sunday, the #Trump Administration opened the doors to Camp East Montana, the largest ICE detention facility in the country’s history. It reportedly cost $1.2 billion under a U.S. Defense Department contract.

"The new facility is at Fort Bliss, one of five sites where Texas held detainees of #Japanese descent, as well as immigrants from #Germany and #Italy — including #AmericanBorn civilians — during #WorldWarII, according to the National Parks Service and The El Paso Times."

#DanielSanchez is facing federal charges for what #FreeSpeech advocates say is a clear attack on the #FirstAmendment.

by Seth Stern, November 23 2025

Excerpt: "Federal prosecutors have filed a new indictment in response to a July 4 noise demonstration outside the #PrairielandICE #DetentionFacility in #AlvaradoTX, during which a police officer was shot.

"There are numerous problems with the indictment, but perhaps the most glaring is its inclusion of charges against a Dallas #artist who wasn’t even at the protest. Daniel 'Des' Sanchez is accused of transporting a box that contained '#Antifa materials' after the incident, supposedly to conceal evidence against his wife, Maricela Rueda, who was there.

"But the boxed materials aren’t Molotov cocktails, pipe bombs, or whatever #MAGA officials claim 'Antifa' uses to wage its imaginary war on America. As prosecutors laid out in the July criminal complaint that led to the indictment, they were zines and pamphlets. Some contain controversial ideas — one was titled '#InsurrectionaryAnarchy' — but they’re fully constitutionally protected free speech. The case demonstrates the administration’s intensifying efforts to criminalize left-wing #activists after Donald Trump announced in September that he was designating 'Antifa' as a 'major terrorist organization' — a legal designation that doesn’t exist for domestic groups — following the killing of Charlie Kirk.

"Sanchez was first indicted in October on charges of 'corruptly concealing a document or record' as a standalone case, but the new indictment merges his charges with those against the other defendants, likely in hopes of burying the First Amendment problems with the case against him under prosecutors’ claims about the alleged shooting.

"It’s an escalation of a familiar tactic. In 2023, Georgia prosecutors listed #ZineDistribution as part of the #conspiracy charges against 61 #StopCopCity protesters in a sprawling #RICO indictment that didn’t bother to explain how each individual defendant was involved in any actual crime. I wrote back then about my concern that this wasn’t just sloppy overreach, but also a blueprint for censorship. Those fears have now been validated by Sanchez’s prosecution solely for possessing similar literature."

82-year old diabetic grandfather sent to Guatamala! WTF!

#ICE secretly deported #Pennsylvania grandfather, 82, after he lost his #GreenCard

‘I can see all my family is in pain right now,’ Luis Leon granddaughter said

by Kelly Rissman, Sunday 20 July 2025

"The family of an 82-year-old Chilean national feared he was dead for weeks before discovering that he had been detained by ICE after he misplaced his green card, according to a report.

"Relatives last saw Luis Leon, who lives in Allentown, Pennsylvania, on June 20, when he and his wife visited the Philadelphia immigration office to replace his lost green card, The Morning Call first reported.

"There, officers handcuffed him and took him away without explanation, relatives told the outlet. His family was left scrambling, contacting immigration offices, hospitals and even a morgue for more information on Leon’s whereabouts.

"Then, on July 9, Leon’s wife received a call that seemed to confirm the family’s worst fears; the caller claimed the 82-year-old had died.

"Thankfully, this week, his family members learned that Leon had been moved from a #DetentionFacility in Minnesota to #Guatemala. He’s now in a hospital in Guatemala City, the outlet reported. The Independent has reached out to ICE for more information.

It’s not immediately clear why he was sent to Guatemala. But last month, the Supreme Court left the door open for the Trump administration to deport immigrants to countries they have never called home.

" 'I can see all my family is in pain right now,' his granddaughter Nataly told The Morning Call. She’s planning to fly to Guatemala to see her grandfather, who suffers from diabetes, high blood pressure and other conditions."
