"Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was arrested Friday at a federal immigration detention center where he has been protesting its opening this week, a federal prosecutor said.

"Alina Habba, interim U.S. attorney for New Jersey, said on the social platform X that Baraka committed trespass and ignored warnings from #HomelandSecurity personnel to leave #DelaneyHall, a detention facility run by private prison operator #GeoGroup.

"In video of the altercation shared with The Associated Press, a federal official in a jacket with the logo of the Homeland Security Investigations can be heard telling Baraka he could not join a tour of the facility because 'you are not a congress member.'

"Baraka then left the secure area, rejoining protesters on the public side of the gate. Video showed him speaking through the gate to a man in a suit, who said: 'They’re talking about coming back to arrest you.'

" 'I’m not on their property. They can’t come out on the street and arrest me,' Baraka replied."

The dying of people is our constant companion. Now two inmates of the preventive detention department of the Freiburg prison died within a short time. And today I wanted to have breakfast in my hometown, Riegel am Kaiserstuhl (a beautiful, little village in the Southwest of Germany) at Café Rösch. As I stood in front of the café, I read: permanently closed, the boss has died. Usually, in my experience, we block out death, our own as well as that of relatives, friends and companions. Our lives can only be understood and lived meaningfully before this final cut in time!

“This is certainly an offer by the facility to become an immigration detention facility,” Eunice Cho, senior staff attorney at the ACLU’s National Prison Project in Washington, D.C., said."

"The GEO Group could not be reached for comment. An ICE spokesman refused to discuss the Lake County prison."

In den USA kann man live sehen, wie sich Faschismus von der Regierungsspitze in die Fläche ausbreitet: das klare Signal von Trump + Co., dass man sich (auch) ggüb. Migrant*innen und Minderheiten nicht an Recht und Gesetz halten muss, ermutigt Staatsbedienstete und ihre Helfer*innen, ebenfalls Willkür zu üben. Wie vor knapp 100 Jahren in Deutschland, wie seit 3 Jahren Russland in der Ukraine - und wie an vielen Orten in der Welt.

Die USA sind dabei aufzuhören, ein demokratischer Rechtsstaat zu sein. Ich würde nicht mehr dort hin reisen. Es wäre mir zu gefährlich.
