Breaking Down Random Generation

Random character generation is an artifact of older editions of D&D, with the OSR and other throwback movements embracing it wholeheartedly. In the present day both old-school D&D derivatives as well as the range of games derived from WFRP’s take on d100 mechanics are still locked in with random generation, with the classic ‘roll 3d6 six times in order’ being both common mechanic and a meme. The problem with random generation in this way is that putting characters arbitrarily at different places on a probability distribution, in effect making characters better or worse based on nothing but luck, is a pretty poor way to accomplish the ultimate goal of random character generation, which is to introduce variability to the type of characters that players ultimately play. In reviewing how a number of different games handle random character generation, specifically random attribute generation, I can’t help but think that these designers know that players don’t like random generation and don’t actually like rolling bad characters. It’s widely known what the most common response to early D&D’s attribute requirements for certain character classes was: Cheat! It therefore stands to reason that games which still commit to random generation either create a system that employs randomness more deliberately, or create a system which softens the blow of the dice. The dangerous allure of perfection.
Dictatorships and the aesthetic of "kitsch" share a common goal: the enforcement of sterile, absolute control. But this engineered perfection is always fragile.

True creative relief and genuine progress require us to acknowledge when the bedrock of rigid systems begins to crack. Is true art ever really finished?

Pinterest is more than digital scrapbooking. It is a potent visual search engine for curating complex biophilic taxonomies.

From fractal patterns to circadian lighting schemes, effective board organization bridges the gap between biological inspiration and architectural implementation.

Our latest guide details the technical strategy for using Pinterest to engineer nature-connected spaces.

Your logo's shape isn't just aesthetic; it's psychological data. 🧠

Round forms imply community and softness (think unity). Angular structures communicate power, stability, and precision.

Our latest analysis explores the semiotics of design to help you align your visual identity with your core values.

Conventional web design is constrained by the "digital box" of rigid, symmetrical grids. This Silphium Design post details a new design methodology: the "organic algorithm."

It's a framework for merging the core tenets of biophilic design with the dynamic balance of asymmetrical layouts. The result is a more intuitive, natural-feeling interface that improves UX and, by extension, SEO.

Wabi-Sabi (侘寂) as a design philosophy counters the pursuit of sterile digital perfection. It prioritizes authenticity by embracing imperfection, asymmetry (fukinsei), and naturalness (shizen).

This guide provides a technical breakdown of the 7 core principles and their direct application to UI/UX—from muted, textured palettes to asymmetrical layouts. This approach also drives positive SEO signals.

Color is a powerful tool in spatial design, capable of transforming a digital (or physical) space to evoke specific emotions. The hues you choose are a critical component of the user experience, directly shaping their mood and perception.

Our new guide explores the psychology of color in space, from the calming effects of cool tones to the energetic impact of warm ones.

How do we make flat screens feel like three-dimensional spaces? It's not magic; it's spatial awareness engineered through visual cues.

Our new guide explores how shadow, perspective, and occlusion create a sense of depth, leading to more intuitive and navigable interfaces. This is critical for modern UI/UX.
