Desdemona in zwart/wit

Amsterdam, 13-6-2013 – In 1983 publiceerde Christine Brückner het korte verhaal Als je gesproken had, Desdemona. Hierin voert zij de tragische heldin uit Shakespeare’s toneelstuk Othello op als iemand die zich niet willig laat vermoorden, maar haar echtgenoot wijst op zijn kinderachtige en onterechte jaloezie. ‘Hoeveel zakdoekjes heb ik wel niet voor je geborduurd, hoe makkelijk raken die niet zoek?’ houdt zij hem voor. – Vanwege een slingerende snotlap concludeert Othello dat zij overspel pleegt – waarna hij haar zonder pardon de nek omdraait.

Het was altijd mijn droom dit schitterende verhaal ooit op muziek te laten zetten, maar men was mij voor: de regisseur Peter Sellars, de auteur Toni Morrison en de zangeres/gitariste Rokia Traoré zetten in hun productie Desdemona een al even zelfbewuste vrouw neer, die weigert zich neer te leggen bij de mores van het 16e eeuwse Venetië. De jonge Desdemona wordt verliefd op de zwarte veldheer Othello, met wie zij, tegen de zin van haar vader een relatie begint. Haar misvatting is dat zij zijn achtergrond begrijpt, maar hij blijft zwart en zij blijft wit.

Deze thematiek wordt door Sellars en Morrison nader uitgewerkt in de voorstelling Desdemona. Deze werd uitgevoerd in het kader van het Holland Festival, in een uitverocht Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ. Een mooie voorstelling, die echter aan het slot ontkracht wordt door een overdaad aan uileggerige politiek-correctheid. Lees hier mijn verslag.

I was going to write up the release of the 2023 edition of Mozilla’s “Privacy Not Included” anti-gift guide based on an advance look at the press release about it, then saw enough questions unanswered by that embargoed release that I decided to wait until the next morning to file. And then this nonprofit’s post announcing the guide had very little in common with the copy I’d seen before.

11/16/2023: Audience with a robot: AGI and a decentralised beneficial Singularity, Web Summit

My first panel Thursday had me interviewing one human, SingularityNet COO Janet Adams, and one non-human, that company’s talking, AI-powered robot Desdemona. I decided to test the robot’s conversational skills by asking her questions based on the Three Laws of Robotics and the Voight-Kampff Test, and she fielded them reasonably well.

In my second panel Thursday, I interviewed Energy Robotics CEO Marc Dassler about the investment climate for robotics startups. We had fewer people show up to watch this, which I think has a great deal to do with this panel being scheduled right before a lunch break.

I assumed that jet lag would have me awake well before the scheduled launch time Saturday of SpaceX’s Starship rocket and so volunteered to write it up. I made a point of noting how much progress this incomplete test represented over April’s messier flight test and nodding to a Reuters report documenting some fairly gruesome workplace-safety issues with Starship.
