As an #American looking across the Atlantic, I'm feeling quite conflicted about #Europe these days. At times they stand up to #Trump, and to powerful American corporations, in admirable ways. But they also share some of the same reprehensible tendencies we see here in the #USA. In particular, they're nearly as susceptible as we are to #racist, #xenophobic anti-#immigrant rhetoric. The #UK appears to be ready to let #Farage take power on such a platform, and #Europe is even starting to imitate one of the criminal practices of our #ICE, namely, #deporting people to nations they never had any connection to, including lawless failed states. And, if anything, #Europe is even more susceptible than the #USA to arguments for repression based on "national security" and "child protection" considerations. Their ghastly proposal for universal monitoring of online chat exceeds anything ever seriously attempted even here in the benighted #USA.
What gives, #Europeans?
That's not a rhetorical question. I'm soliciting #European opinions about WTF is wrong with #Europe — and how it can coexist with so much about #Europe that is good and admirable.
