"Climate change is contributing to sharp rise in cases of dengue fever, UW researcher finds

A recent study led by UW professor Marissa Childs links the rise of dengue fever, a disease spread by mosquitoes to increasing temperatures caused by climate change.

Childs, a researcher in the department of environmental & occupational health sciences explained that dengue fever is unique in a few different ways. It is a vector-borne viral disease, meaning it is transmitted only by the bite of an infected mosquito, not from person to person.

'A lot of infectious diseases are climate sensitive, so they're strongly affected by weather conditions,' Childs said. 'Vector-borne diseases are particularly sensitive because the virus or pathogen spends a lot of time in the mosquito host, and you need the mosquito host in order to complete the transmission cycle.'

Dengue fever, like other mosquito-borne diseases like malaria and West Nile virus, are much more prevalent in and often endemic to tropical and subtropical areas, including large parts of Asia and South America.

The optimal average temperature for the mosquitoes that carry the dengue virus is 28 degrees Celsius, which is equivalent to about 82.4 degrees Fahrenheit. As cooler parts of the world warm due to climate change, incidence of dengue fever is increasing"
