"People ask the gods for health in their prayers, but do not realize that the control of their health lies with them; through lack of self-control they act in opposition to it and so themselves betray their health to their desires."

Seneca’s Insights of Crying, Laughing, Or Accepting

Great thinkers set out many insights helpful for us in late modern life. From time to time, I produce short podcast episodes mining and refining those insights. Here’s one from the ancient Stoic…

“In the weightiest matters we must go to school to the #animals, and learn spinning and weaving from the spider, building from the swallow, singing from the birds, — from the swan and the nightingale, imitating their art.”

#Democritus (Greek: Δημόκριτος, Dēmókritos, meaning chosen of the people) claimed that everything starts from atoms, in a bottom-up #causation.

#Democracy (Greek: δημοκρατία, dēmokratiā, from dēmos ‘people’ and kratos ‘rule’) can be described as #emergent top-down #control mechanisms based on the free association and decision of autonomous individuals.

All #causation is bottom-up or from the inside-out. There is no such thing as top-down causation imposed from the outside. There is only an emergent (internal) level of constraints and other control mechanisms generated by the interaction of individuals fulfilling a common need or objective.
