Now for my second post about #democraticschools: All rules governing coexistence are decided by the members of the school community in what is known as the school assembly. The school assembly is the highest authority. Some democratic schools even vote on the hiring of new teachers or the upcoming budget in their school assemblies. Every member of the school community (children, adults) can submit proposals, which must then be negotiated.

What distinguishes a democratic school from other schools? They all share the same conviction: Students and adults create, shape, and change their school on an equal footing with the help of democratic procedures. Adults and teachers cannot simply impose their interests because of their special position in the school system—they must adhere to and use democratic procedures just like the students. Next post: Where are democratic decisions made?

Two of my favorite persons from quite different disciplines having a chat! Rob Hopkins and Peter Grey talking about play and imagination:

Talking Play and Imagination with Peter Gray - Resilience

Play is so important because over the course of natural selection, play is the means by which children learn what they need to know, by which they develop.
