Bagarre in Aula

Moment of silence for Bossi, the Dem councilor from Milan: “He cleared the way for racism, I apologize to the citizens.” Chaos in the Chamber.

The Milan City Council chamber wanted to remember Umberto Bossi, the founder of the Lega, who passed away last week at the age of 84, with a minute of silence, having also been a city councilor in Milan during his political career. However, the commemoration ended in a commotion with shouts and accusations between the ruling majority and the opposition, and the suspension of the session. Vice-president of the chamber Roberta Osculati explained that “personally, despite belonging to a political culture distant in terms of style, tone, and ideas from that of Umberto Bossi, I can only join the many commentators who have recognized his leadership skills and, above all, his ability to read society, certainly of a part of Northern Italy, between the late 1980s and 1990s, and his ability to involve so many people in a political project born in Lombardy and then grown throughout the country.”

Lega group leader in the City Council, Alessandro Verri, also remembered the party founder immediately afterward. Until Michele Albiani, a councilor from the PD (Democratic Party), took the floor, who criticized the act of paying a minute of silence in the council chamber to Bossi, “who legitimized hatred towards those not from the North, who had once said with the fascists – he explained. Shame, you have paid a minute of silence for someone who legitimized this racism.” From the benches of the right-wing coalition, shouts and protests erupted, “shame, be quiet,” Verri shouted, trying to prevent the Democrat from continuing his intervention. Following the protests of the councilors, the session was suspended for a few minutes before resuming when the situation calmed down.
