Immigrant from Republic of Georgia Dies in Louisiana ICE Jail

An immigrant from the nation of Georgia has died in an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center. Mamuka Artmeladze is the 50th person to die in ICE custody since Trump returned to office. The 43-year-old had been jailed at the troubled Winn Correctional Center in Louisiana for about four months when he was found unresponsive. ICE officials have not disclosed further details about his death. Artmeladze is the second immigrant to die while detained at Winn Correctional Center in less than two months. The facility is operated by the Winn Parish Sheriff’s Office and ICE contractor LaSalle Corrections. A recent inspection of the ICE jail found excessive use of force by guards, poor medical care and unsanitary conditions.

NYC Mayor Mamdani Pushes Back Against Border Czar Homan’s Threats

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani pushed back against Tom Homan’s threats during a press conference with Governor Kathy Hochul Monday, calling for ICE to be abolished and saying, “I believe that ICE raids are cruel, they are inhumane, they do nothing to serve in the interest of public safety.” Mamdani also responded to the mounting barriers faced by World Cup fans and soccer players from qualifying nations that are on Trump’s travel ban and visa restrictions list. Mayor Zohran Mamdani: “The World Cup is supposed to be a celebration of the world as a whole. And some of the decisions that we’ve seen been taken by the federal administration, be it the denial of visas for journalists from certain countries or the rejection of a visa for a coach of a team, as well as single-day visas for specific foreign national teams, this is anathema to what this tournament is supposed to be about. If we cannot even allow the players, the teams and the journalists covering those teams to come into this city and this country, then it begs a larger question about our commitment to the spirit of this tournament.”

Progressive L.A. Councilmember Nithya Raman Advances to November Runoff Against Incumbent Mayor Bass

In California, progressive Los Angeles City Councilmember Nithya Raman will advance to a November runoff election against incumbent Mayor Karen Bass, who’s seeking a second term in office. A count of mail-in ballots from the June 2 primary showed Raman surging ahead of former reality TV personality Spencer Pratt. This comes as officials continue to count ballots in the race to succeed Governor Gavin Newsom. With more than 80% tallied, Republican Steve Hilton has a slight lead over Democrat Tom Steyer in a close race for second place; one of them will advance to take on former Biden administration Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra in the general election. On Monday, President Trump repeated his unfounded claim that California’s elections were “rigged,” writing on his Truth Social platform, “Not possible for Spencer Pratt to have lost the L.A. runoffs after the big lead he had. 3rd World Nation.” More than half of Los Angeles voters are registered Democrats, compared to less than 15% who are Republicans.

Nigeria’s Military Says It Has Freed 360 People Abducted by Boko Haram

Nigeria’s military says it has freed 360 people abducted by Boko Haram in southern Borno, in the northeastern part of the country. But villagers in the region say joint U.S.-Nigerian airstrikes killed dozens of civilians during operations in May, when AFRICOM and the Nigerian Army claimed they killed 175 so-called terrorists over three days. Nigeria is facing a decadelong insurgency in the north of the country, where armed groups have routinely carried out kidnappings for ransom.

AP: Trump Admin Separated Dozens of Immigrant Children from Their Parents for a Second Time

In more immigration news, an investigation by the Associated Press has found the Trump administration has separated dozens of immigrant children from their parents for a second time. These families had been previously separated during Trump’s first term as he enforced his so-called zero-tolerance policy, leading to hundreds of children being ripped from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border. Trump officials have re-separated the families in violation of a landmark legal settlement that was meant to reunite immigrant children with their parents. Under Trump’s second term, some of these parents have been detained in ICE jails, and others wrongfully deported and forced to leave their children in the U.S. Meanwhile, an estimated 500 babies and toddlers have been reportedly jailed by ICE since Trump’s return to the White House.

House GOP Approves $70 Billion to Fund Trump’s Immigration Crackdown

House Republicans have approved a $70 billion budget reconciliation package to fund President Trump’s immigration crackdown through the end of his term — again bypassing Congress’s annual appropriations process. The measure now heads to Trump’s desk to be signed into law, ending a monthslong funding standoff between Republicans and Democrats following the fatal shootings of Alex Pretti and Renee Good in Minneapolis. This funding package comes in addition to the $170 billion already approved for ICE and Border Patrol last year as part of Trump’s so-called One Big Beautiful Bill. Democratic Congressmember Maxwell Frost said on social media, “Instead of investing in you and ensuring you can afford your healthcare, groceries, or rent — they chose to hand $70 BILLION to agencies operating without any guardrails while terrorizing and brutalizing our communities.”

World Cup Referee from Somalia Returns Home After U.S. Denies Him Entry

A World Cup referee from Somalia returned home on Wednesday after being denied entry into the United States just days before the start of the tournament. Omar Artan was due to be the first referee from Somalia to officiate at a World Cup and has been named one of Africa’s top referees. Artan had flown into Miami International Airport from Turkey and was reportedly told by U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents that he was inadmissible to the U.S. Artan arrived in the Somali capital Mogadishu earlier today, where he was welcomed by soccer fans. Abdi Yusuf: “Our referee is an international standard. He has officiated international matches in Africa and Asia, and he was on his way to officiate global football matches. It would have been his first time participating in the world football stage. We are saddened by the way he was discriminated against, and we strongly condemn this act.” Trump’s immigration crackdown and visa restrictions have disrupted travel into the U.S. for scores of World Cup fans and players from qualifying nations, with advocates around the world condemning his policies.

Report from Tehran: Amid More U.S./Iran Bombing, Trump Warns Iran Is ”DEAD…Will Pay the Price”

After the downing of an Apache helicopter near the Strait of Hormuz, the United States and Iran have begun trading missile and drone strikes in the most serious escalation of hostilities since the April ceasefire agreement. President Trump posted on social media Wednesday morning that Iran has taken “too long to negotiate a deal” and would now have to “pay the price!!!” For more, we speak to Mohammad Eslami at Tehran University, who says Trump’s “lies and broken promises” have shattered Iranians’ trust in a diplomatic solution. “Every night, there are lots of peoples chanting all around the street against Trump. And also, … unfortunately, many of them are chanting against negotiation with Donald Trump,” he says. “Right now they are asking the Iranian [forces] to retaliate.”
