LLANA OF GATHOL (1979)

Acrylic - 24" x 32"

Since I did the eleven Martial Tales books over the course of a year, as time went on some things became less important. This time we did not worry about the title of the book, and Llana herself does not even appear in my painting. 1/4

NIOBE (1985)
Oil on Panel - 29” x 19”

Since 1975, I have worked almost exclusively in acrylics, but I still love to paint in oils. Not long before doing this cover, I moved to a new studio that was larger and better organized than my old one. 1/4

JOURNEY BEHIND THE WIND (1986)
Acrylic - 16” x 24”

Occasionally, I'll use a model in the course of painting an illustration. In this case I decided to use a photographer who worked about an hour’s drive from my studio. 1/5

NOR CRYSTAL TEARS (1981)
Acrylic - 30" x 19”

A favorite theme of mine is the depiction of human-alien interactions. This book deals with the subject so wonderfully that I wanted to make it the focus of attention for the cover painting. 1/4

THE WARLORD OF MARS (1979)
Acrylic - 20” x 25”

I have had a special fondness for The Martian Tales by Edgar Rice Burroughs ever since I first read them in my early teens. 1/5

FRIDAY (1982)
Acrylic - 30" x 20"

Robert Heinlein does create memorable characters! Not even halfway through this book I had a nearly photographic image of Friday in my mind. By the time I finished I felt confident about the substance and approach my painting would have. 1/4

THE CAVES OF STEEL (1986)

Acrylic - 18" x 30"

The composition of this painting is dictated by the "caves" metaphor running through the narrative and reflected in the title. The figures of Baley and Daneel are surrounded by the vast metal "cave" of an Earthly city. 1/4

DRAGONQUEST (1978)
Acrylic on Masonite - 20" X 30"

The primary menace to the planet Pern is "Thread," a corrosive and devastating alien life form which falls from the Red Star and burrows its way into the soil, destroying all life and making the soil unusable. Only the dragons who are able to burn the Thread out of the sky can save the inhabitants. 1/3
