The only goods that truly matter and have value are those that are held in common. Therefore when anyone exchanges anything, from words, to tangible goods, in a non-exploitive manner and form and is publicly sworn to have malice toward none, that transaction or exchange has real trackable value, and adds to the earned value of the common goods. Likewise a credit or token can be imbued with that value and exchanged based upon a "gold standard" of common goods. Virtually everything in the current capitalistic culture relies upon the capture and enclosure of what was once common goods of some kind. As the public commons decreases, all currencies and environments become less stable, tipping to the brink the sustenance only afforded by the robustness of the public commons. A currency of exchange would depend and become more valuable as streams are restored, soils are regenerated, and specie diversity increased, or decrease as our living planetary diversity is diminished.
