Hi fedi folk - It’s lovely to be here! I just moved from mastodon.social to sunny.garden and think it’s time for an #introduction.
I’m Bearina, 30-something from Mannheim, Germany. I make #zines, #ArtistTradingCards and have become a #printmaker recently. I also got back into #photography a few days ago which was my first hobby. I got my first point and shoot camera when I was 12 and fell in love with it before that, using my parents camera and strolling through the neighborhood. I like seeing creativity around me and love to get inspired by other artists.
#SciFi is my jam and I love movies in general. And bears! Lovely creatures.
#DeGoogling right now! Also I’m working on relaunching my website and make it more #IndieWeb friendly and #accessible but also give it a bit more personality. I want to start a blog and share my thoughts. Which reminds me: Words are hard! I try my best but not always succeed.
I’m so excited to meet new people! I toot in German and English.
#neuhier
Lol
My android #degoogling journey so far:
App Stores: F-Droid, APKmirror, APKPure, Aurora (preferred order)
Keyboard: Heliboard
Email client: Thunderbird
Browser: IronFox
Maps: OrganicMaps
MFA: Aegis
Videos: NewPipe
Podcast: Antenna-Pod
Social: Mastodon
Facebook, Instagram, Uber: Nora
Chat: Element
PDF reader: Episteme
Calendar, Music Player, Notes, Contacts, Gallery, File Manager: Fossify
Misc closed-source apps that don't require Play Services: APKmirror or Aurora Store (last resort)
I haven't had a Google account on my phone for a long time now, although I'm not really sure how effective this strategy is in terms of privacy.
In any case, the downsides of this choice are minimal. Only apps that are closely tied to a Google account—like Keep, Calendar, Play Store, etc.—don't work; everything else works fine.
With this approach, for example, I can use Android Auto without any issues, for which there are currently no alternatives 😓
Disabling Google Play Services is a great way to discover who are the good guys and who are the bad guys.
https://murena.io - apart from making /e/os to replace your Android installation on Pixel and other phones - offers a free workspace based on #nextcloud and #onlyoffice.
I have tried a number of nextcloud free accounts and they all sucked. This one does not suck. You get 1gb for free. You can find out whether their office, photos, news reader, and other apps will suit you as a replacement for Google.
If you like it, pay $20 a year for 20gb to keep them afloat.
