The Fight Against #CopCity

The protests in Atlanta build on a history of organizers challenging prison construction as a force for environmental destruction.

"Locals often describe Atlanta as “a city in a forest,” with trees and a tree canopy covering almost half of the land. The ecosystem depends on this foliage, and activists say that the deforestation required to build the facility will harm air quality, hasten climate change, and contribute to flooding in predominantly poor and working-class Black and brown communities. The proposed development will further distance residents from accessible green space while bringing toxic waste closer. But the project will do more than fracture the largest green space in Atlanta. The activists fighting against Cop City argue that police violence itself constitutes an environmental hazard, and that toxic chemicals associated with explosives that could be used on the site will destroy the air, water, and land on which myriad forms of life depend."

#HBCU students, faculty, and community activists have joined forces to stop the environmentally destructive police training facility.

"#Environmental activists have long raised concerns about 'Cop City' due to its potential #ecological impact. The facility is slated to be built in the #WeelauneeForest (South River), a tract of undeveloped #forested land that serves as an essential #GreenSpace and #CarbonSink for the city. Activists say losing this green space would contribute to increased #AirPollution, decreased #biodiversity, and the exacerbation of #ClimateChange.

"Along with concern about the environmental impact, opposition to 'Cop City' from the #Black community also stems from fears of racial profiling, over-policing, and strained police-community relations. Critics argue that the allocated funds should be redirected to address systemic issues affecting Black residents, such as education and community development, rather than expanding policing resources."

Τον Απρίλιο του 2021, η τότε δήμαρχος της Ατλάντα, Keisha Lance Bottoms (μαύρη γυναίκα και Δημοκρατική) ανακοίνωσε τα σχέδια για την κατασκευή μιας νέας εκπαιδευτικής εγκατάστασης, η οποία θα προσομοιάζει τον αστικό ιστό και θα προορίζεται για μπατσούς και πυροσβέστες, ώστε να γνωρίζουν πώς να επεμβαίνουν σε αστικές εξεγέρσεις και άλλα συμβάντα(cop city). Αυτή η «εικονική πόλη» σχεδιάζεται να κατασκευαστείπάνω σε 300 στρέμματα δάσους. Το έργο αποτελεί μια σύμπραξη δημόσιουκαι ιδιωτικού τομέα ύψους 90 εκατομμυρίων δολαρίων, εγκεκριμένο απότο Δημοτικό Συμβούλιο. Βέβαια, η σθεναρά αρνητική στάση της τοπικής κοινότητας των κατοίκων της πόλης της Ατλάντα δεν εισακούστηκε (το συντριπτικό 70% των κατοίκων είχε εκφράσει την αντίθεσή του στη διαβούλευση) και έτσι σήμερα τονίζουν ότι «η όλη διαδικασία ήταν πιο σκιερή από το ίδιο το δάσος».Η κύρια δύναμη πίσω από το έργο είναι το Atlanta Police Foundation(Ίδρυμα Αστυνομίας της Ατλάντα), ένας ιδιωτικός μη κερδοσκοπικός οργανισμός, που ιδρύθηκε το 2003 για να υποστηρίζει πρωτοβουλίεςμπάτσων. Με άλλα λόγια: το έργο προωθεί μια ΜΚΟ (!) μπάτσων (!). Ταυτόχρονα, 40 στρέμματα από το δάσος και το Intrenchment Creek(ένα υπάρχον δημόσιο πάρκο) έχουν μπει στο στόχαστρο κινηματογραφικού στούντιο. Κάτι πωλήσεις μεταξύ πλουσίων κινηματογραφικών παραγωγών και μερικές υπογραφές σε συμβόλαια με περίεργες ρήτρες φαίνεται να πηγαίνουν προς το παρόν πίσω την κατασκευή του στούντιο, αν και ακόμα υπάρχουν προτάσεις για αποψίλωση 170 στρεμμάτων δάσους ώστε έναμέρος να μετατραπεί σε αεροδρόμιο και σε ένα να στηθεί το μεγαλύτερο στούντιο στην Αμερική. Έτσι, το σύνθημα «Stop Cop City» δεν παύει να συνοδεύεται με το σύνθημα «No Hollywood Dystopia».Από το 2021 μέχρι και σήμερα άτομα που υπερασπίζονται το δάσος εναντια στα σχέδια για το copcity διαμένουν εκεί και αφενός αντιστέκονταιστις συστηματικές επιθέσεις της αστυνομίας, αφετέρου αναπτύσσουν τηνκοινότητα τους Οι επιθέσεις των μπάτσων στο κατειλημμένο δάσος είναι συχνές,ωστόσο, σε μια καθοριστική στιγμή αναβάθμισης της κρατικής βίας, την Τετάρτη 18 Ιανουαρίου 2023 το Manuel Teran, 26 χρονών, γνωστό επίσης και ως «Tortuguita» ή «Little Turtle» έπεσενεκρό από σφαίρα μπάτσου. Εις μνήμη του, ως απάντηση στη δολοφονία του και ως συνέχεια του αγώνα έγιναν καλέσματα για «νύχτες οργής» σεπόλεις,πραγματοποιώντας πορείες και συγκεντρώσεις πένθους με πανό και κεράκια για την απώλειατου Tortuguita.

Αυτό που ακολούθησε από την πλευρά του κράτους ήταν η όξυνσητης κρατικής καταστολής, ανεβάζοντάς την στο ίσως μεγαλύτερο δυνατόεπίπεδο έντασης. Σήμερα, τουλάχιστον 18 συλληφθέντα κατηγορούνταιβάσει νόμου για τρομοκρατία. Έξι από αυτά, συνελήφθησαν και κατηγορήθηκαν για εγχώρια τρομοκρατία μετά την «νύχτα οργής» το Σάββατο, ενώ τα υπόλοιπα σε επιδρομές μέσα στο δάσος. H αίτηση καταβολής εγγύησης για αποφυλάκισή τους απορρίφθηκε για τέσσερααπό τα συλληφθέντα, ενώ σε άλλα δύο χορηγήθηκε μεν εγγύηση, αλλά αυτή ορίστηκε στο άνευ προηγουμένου ποσό των 355.000 δολαρίων και συνοδεύτηκε με πλήθος προϋποθέσεων, όπως βραχιολάκι και κατ’ οίκονπεριορισμό Στέλνοντας την αλληλεγγύη μας στα συντροφιά της Ατλάντα στεκόμαστε δίπλα σε αυτά που απαντάνε στην αστυνομική βία και την καταστολή του κράτους, σε όσα παλεύουν ενάντια στην λεηλασία τηςφύσης και της άγριας ζωης. Από την υπεράσπιση των δασών, των βουνών,των ποταμιών, τη διεκδίκηση δημοσίων χώρων, πάρκων και λόφων μέχρικαι το τελευταίο δεντράκι της μίζερης αυτής μητρόπολης.

Ενάντια στην μαζική βιομηχανία την εκμετάλλευση και τον εγκλεισμό ανθρώπινων ζωών ή μη.
