What keeps me from veering from grumpiness about my species to outright nihilism, even when an awful lot of people seem to make dumb choices, is that it's not the fault of our individual lives that evolution built us to be riddled with security flaws in how we process the world around us, so bad ideas can easily infect us. You can't fault a toddler for failing calculus, and you have to let us off the hook for engineering mistakes. #misanthropy #proanthropy #forgiveness #longview #deeptime

The centimeter wide rock layer that records the Cretaceous–Paleogene boundary that ended the rein of the dinosaurs. (It's the brown layer between the coal & light claystone layers.) It was created by the fallout of a 12km impactor that created the 250km wide Chicxulub crater offshore of the Yucatán Peninsula. The layer contains shocked quartz & an anomalous concentration of the element iridium marking an extraterrestrial impact.

"Deep Time Australia
is an ABC News Story Lab project that provides a glimpse into the ancient history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who have occupied this land for more than 65,000 years. The stories contained in this project belong to the knowledge holders and keepers, and they have been generously shared with the ABC for this project. Without them the beautiful complexity of this project would not have been possible."

The epic story of Australia and its first peoples — like you've never seen it

The story of Australia and its peoples is vast and deep. It's one you should know, but possibly one you've never been told. Well, not like this anyway.

To the world, the Oak is merely fodder for the hearth or an obstacle to "renewal."

But the Oak is a survivor. While we overheat in discourse, it cools the air. It heals by connecting, refusing to be bent by the crimes committed against it.

Stop with the wisdom of the Gretas. Put aside your sociology degrees.

The Oak is the true manifesto for a complex society—Read on: https://library.profpeter.my/paper-trails/mastodon-short/true-science-of-the-oak

"Frankly, I’m surprised you’re even interviewing me. Geologists generally treat me as a nonentity. I’m an un-rock, a cipher, just an irregular surface."

🧬 Life kept upgrading itself, code rewriting code. Single cells learned to cluster, then specialize, then network. Fungi arrived early, aquatic, flagellated, flinging spores like packets through water. They hacked land via algae, spun mycelial grids under shifting continents, laid dark infrastructure for everything that followed.

Evolution doesn’t rush toward dominance. It stabilizes conditions until dominance becomes possible.
