The Fate of the World: A History and Future of the Climate Crisis by Bill McGuire, 2026

The Fate of the World is a 4.6-billion-year history of the Earth, putting contemporary global heating in the context of geological epochs and periods to reveal what past climate change can tell us about our planet’s future.

Sixty-two million years ago, four million years after the sky fell, a stretch of Egyptian seafloor filled with fish — and held them, perfectly, in stone. Five hundred specimens. More than twenty kinds. A petrified aquarium pulled from blistering sand at a site called Qreiya 3. The asteroid gutted the ocean's food webs, and into that emptied water the percomorphs exploded into needle-toothed predators and the ancestors of tuna and seahorses.

In this workshop we will take a closer look into #rocks minerals, and other geological
formations. Starting with a theoretical introduction into the history of geological taxonomies, and into concepts like #deeptime . In a practical part, we will grow #crystals, explore their properties, and write about how they defy and challenge taxonomies and binaries.

The geologist James Hutton was born in Edinburgh 300 years ago tomorrow. Two slices of Scottish geology I (an ecologist) have enjoyed studying. The Moine Thrust Mylonites at Faraid Head, Balnakeil Bay and lichens on a basalt dyke in Lewisian gneiss, Raasay.

What keeps me from veering from grumpiness about my species to outright nihilism, even when an awful lot of people seem to make dumb choices, is that it's not the fault of our individual lives that evolution built us to be riddled with security flaws in how we process the world around us, so bad ideas can easily infect us. You can't fault a toddler for failing calculus, and you have to let us off the hook for engineering mistakes. #misanthropy #proanthropy #forgiveness #longview #deeptime

The centimeter wide rock layer that records the Cretaceous–Paleogene boundary that ended the rein of the dinosaurs. (It's the brown layer between the coal & light claystone layers.) It was created by the fallout of a 12km impactor that created the 250km wide Chicxulub crater offshore of the Yucatán Peninsula. The layer contains shocked quartz & an anomalous concentration of the element iridium marking an extraterrestrial impact.

"Deep Time Australia
is an ABC News Story Lab project that provides a glimpse into the ancient history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who have occupied this land for more than 65,000 years. The stories contained in this project belong to the knowledge holders and keepers, and they have been generously shared with the ABC for this project. Without them the beautiful complexity of this project would not have been possible."

The epic story of Australia and its first peoples — like you've never seen it

The story of Australia and its peoples is vast and deep. It's one you should know, but possibly one you've never been told. Well, not like this anyway.

🧂 Much of the revisionist argument rests on computer simulations. Models are only as good as boundary conditions and assumptions.
