Sixty-two million years ago, four million years after the sky fell, a stretch of Egyptian seafloor filled with fish — and held them, perfectly, in stone. Five hundred specimens. More than twenty kinds. A petrified aquarium pulled from blistering sand at a site called Qreiya 3. The asteroid gutted the ocean's food webs, and into that emptied water the percomorphs exploded into needle-toothed predators and the ancestors of tuna and seahorses.

The geologist James Hutton was born in Edinburgh 300 years ago tomorrow. Two slices of Scottish geology I (an ecologist) have enjoyed studying. The Moine Thrust Mylonites at Faraid Head, Balnakeil Bay and lichens on a basalt dyke in Lewisian gneiss, Raasay.

The centimeter wide rock layer that records the Cretaceous–Paleogene boundary that ended the rein of the dinosaurs. (It's the brown layer between the coal & light claystone layers.) It was created by the fallout of a 12km impactor that created the 250km wide Chicxulub crater offshore of the Yucatán Peninsula. The layer contains shocked quartz & an anomalous concentration of the element iridium marking an extraterrestrial impact.
