the theory is that by burning off tall heather every few years it stimulates regrowth of young shoots of heather which is the main food of red grouse .…the target species for shooting.
Heather doesn’t thrive on deep peat, so burning it is pointless and causes damage to the peat, exposing it to drying and erosion and releasing carbon. It also causes fast runoff of rainfall which increases the risk of flooding to downstream communities.
