A rather wonderful ship-shaped weather vane on the top of the hall of the Shettleston Old Parish Church Hall on Killin Street in the East End of Glasgow. The hall was designed by W.F. MacGibbon, and was built around 1900.

I love these cast iron Juliet balconies on the 1837 Georgian townhouses on Newton Place in Glasgow. The central palmette, or palm frond, motif originates in Ancient Egyptian architecture and was widely used by Alexander 'Greek' Thomson and other Classical Glasgow architects of the nineteenth century.

Like much of the minor sculptures and stonework in Glasgow, these feathres really help to give the city its characteristic feel, but too often we concentrate on protecting the big buildings by famous architects and not the small, once widespread features which play just as important a role in making Glasgow feel like Glasgow rather than just another urban area anywhere in the world.

Decorative ironwork and lamp above the door of 81 Parnie Street in Glasgow.

I love finding original bits of metalwork like this, however they're getting harder and harder to find as more and more of then get damaged and lost over time.
