Yes, only 35 days to go before the inaugural Symbols of Mortality conference opens its online doors. Featuring the very best historians/archaeologists in their field, in my humble opinion, a full cornucopia of deathly related themes and discussions will be unleashed.

The full programme will be available next week. Feel free to drop me a line for further details.

πŸ“’ New Post πŸ“’

In my latest article, I have built upon previous research. It discusses the Coalport ferry disaster of 1799 and the many lives lost to the river. This one is personal to me, as it also includes my own families loss.

Loss and the River- some stories of Jackfield

There is something quite special about Jackfield. The whole area hums with its history, it’s a tangible, accessible thing. As you walk past...

This stunning mosaic headstone sits in my local churchyard in Madeley, Shropshire. It commemorates the life of a young boy, who died in tragic circumstances. Handmade by his mother, it's a testament to her love.

Charles Arthur Turner deserves to be remembered πŸ’š

The Memorials of St Michaels- Charles Arthur Turner

The Memorials of St Michaels - Charles Arthur Turner  When I think of St Michaels church in Madeley I think of primary school, of harvest ...

My body lies beneath
stone.
And shows whereto
all flesh must come.
No state or worth
nor power can save
There’s no distinction
in the grave.

Epitaph on a #gravestone in #Connecticut from 1776 -
My sleeping dust beneath
this tomb proclaim,
Where too all flesh
must come,
And in this glass you
plainly see
You soon must mingle
dust with me

**NEW BLOG POST** A chance discovery concerning not one but two Death Penny's found in situ in Tomnahurich Cemetery, Inverness. A Death Penny is a plaque commemorating those who had fallen in WWI. Has anyone come across similar in their cemetery wanderings?

St Bartholomew's, Orford, Suffolk.

In yovthfvll yeres, I was berefte of breth,
The devine power, of me did so devise,
That I in grave, shoulde lie a lingring sleepe,
Till sovnde of trvmp doo svmmon me to rise.

Memorial brass to Jone Wheatley, died 1603. There's a Suffolk accent in the way that 'doo summon me' has been written. It's a late brass, and to a woman too - Jone's mother, Bridget Smith, died 1605, is commemorated above.
