John Prine, Diamonds in the Rough, 1972 on Atlantic

This was Prine’s sophomore album, following the self-titled John Prine. Prine is joined by Steve Goodman, David Bromberg, Steve Burgh, and Dave Prine.

I just love Prine’s songwriting: “Souvenirs,” “Yes I Guess They Oughta Name A Drink After You” and “Late John Garfield Blues” on this LP. He also does “Diamonds in the Rough” by AP Carter. Naming the LP after the one cover as a singer-songwriter is a bold move.

My copy, via the Worcester Record Riot, is a Monarch pressing with the Broadway address in the rim text.

David Bromberg, My Own House, 1978 on Fantasy

Bromberg’s 9th album as a solo artist, from 1978 – his first on Fantasy after three great Columbia records in the seventies. Bromberg is one of my favorite musicians I feel doesn’t get enough attention.

Fewer guest stars here than some of his other albums, but still excellent music from Bromberg, including a number of traditionals and blues covers (Blind Blake and Blind Boy Fuller). Produced by Bromberg himself, with George Kindler and Dick Fegy supporting on mandolin, fiddle, and banjo.

My copy, via Electric Fetus in Minneapolis MN, is a 1978 pressing in great shape.

David Bromberg, Wanted Dead or Alive, 1974 on Columbia

I’m a huge David Bromberg fan – he’s an under-appreciated player in the universe of bluegrass/blues/folk/jazz. This was his third LP. One side was recorded with Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh, Keith Godchaux and Bill Kreutzmann (of the Grateful Dead) and the other side was recorded live.

The opener “The Holdup” was cowritten with George […]

David Bromberg - Demon In Disguise (Columbia, 1972)

Ngl, I initially grabbed this record for the Grateful Dead cameos, then had a eureka moment when Sharon started - not where I expected to stumble across a classic hip-hop sample, but the Dust Brothers were unconventional. I just recently realized Bromberg produced John Hartford's Aereo-Plain, one of my all-time faves.

Hope to see Jorma and Hot Tuna this August a few times, and then Asleep at the Wheel in October is booked. Now if we could summon Jerry Jeff Walker and George Frayne from the grave I could be 25 all over again! Hey #davidbromberg you know you have a standing invitation down here in Arizona anytime, any time at all!
Much love boys, you gave me some of the best times I could ever ask for!

TOM RUSH, CLUB 47

Back in the ‘60s there were a lot of coffee houses in the greater Boston area, but what made the original Club 47 the flagship of the fleet was that they not only hosted the young, local folkies (myself included), but also brought in the legends! You could sit in this little 80-seat room and listen to Maybelle Carter, Flatt & Scruggs, Bill Monroe. And they hosted Sleepy John Estes, Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters and many more of the blues icons.

What was even more amazing was that the legends were (mostly) friendly people!! You could go up to them and ask, “How do you do that thing you do?” and they would show you! There was a lot of amazing back-and-forth between the generations.

I acquired the Club 47 name around 1986, when the original coffee house had been closed for about 18 years (it closed in ’68 and a year later the location became the Passim coffeehouse — genetically unrelated but hosting the same kind of music as the 47).

I had started doing shows at Boston’s Symphony Hall in late December, between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, in 1982 if memory serves. They always featured guest artists and around ’86 I decided to do a three-night Club 47 reunion. My lawyer asked if I had permission to use the name, I said I wouldn’t even know who to ask. He got back to me in a few days and said the name was “unencumbered” and suggested I “encumber” it. So we got a Trademark and Service Mark.

I’ve since done Club 47 shows all over the country, including at Carnegie Hall in New York, the Kennedy Center in DC … on and on. And, I’ve tried to keep the Club 47 shows true to the spirit of the original coffee house, featuring established artists mixed with really talented newcomers, coaxing them into interacting and playing with one another. And each show is one-of-a kind — I’ve never repeated one yet.

Favorite Club 47 Story of the Month:

Two guests at one of my Symphony Hall Club 47 shows (1986?) were Bo Diddley and David Bromberg. It’s not widely known, but Mr. Diddley was an accomplished violinist. He borrowed David’s fiddle and David borrowed Bo’s bright red, rectangular electric guitar, and they’re backstage just before the show goes up — jamming Hava Nagila to the Bo Diddley beat!

David Bromberg - Demon In Disguise
From 1972 I love this album. It brings together two of my all time faves in The Grateful Dead, as Jerry, Phil, Bill, Keith, and Donna all contributed; and The Beastie Boys, who sampled “Sharon” for it’s classic Paul’s Boutique cut, “Johnny Ryall”. #Vinyl #RecordCollection #NowSpinning #DavidBromberg #GratefulDead #BeastieBoys
