David Gilmour - 'David Gilmour'. 🎸⚡💿 (26 May 1978)
‎‎ ‎ ‎
A solid blend of progressive rock with flashes of blues woven throughout, packed with soaring instrumentals and unmistakable vocals from David Gilmour on his self-titled debut solo album, ‘David Gilmour’, released on this day in 1978. To me, a lot of it genuinely sounds like late '70s Pink Floyd, just without Roger Waters steering the ship, so it is hard not to enjoy when it carries that unmistakable Pink Floyd DNA alongside Gilmour’s unmatched touch for guitar solos. The album was recorded mainly at Super Bear Studios in France and features contributions from several musicians connected to Pink Floyd’s circle, including Rick Wills and Willie Wilson. Parts of the record even originated from ideas that had been floating around during the making of 'Animals' and 'Wish You Were Here', which explains why it often feels like a lost companion piece to that era of the band. Despite being a solo effort, Gilmour handled a huge chunk of the instrumentation himself, which gives the album a really personal feel. Personally, I highly recommend this album, especially for songs such "There Is No Way Out of Here", which still gives me chills in the best possible way, alongside "So Far Away" and the mesmerising instrumental "Raise My Rent".
