X, See How We Are, 1987 on Elektra

This was the sixth studio album from Exene Cervenka, John Doe, and D.J. Bonebrake, and the first after the departure of Billy Zoom. He was replaced by Dave Alvin and then Tony Gilkyson, both of whom are credited on the LP. Benmont Tench also contributes on the Hammond organ.

The standout for me is “4th of July” which Alvin wrote. The whole album is decent, but doesn’t live up to Los Angeles or other earlier albums

My copy—via a record fair at Mill No. 5 in Lowell MA—is a 1987 US Specialty pressing with the original inner liner.

"Ashgrove" by Dave Alvin released this day in 2004.
I was a Blasters fan. Got to see them in the 80's. The work Dave has done since has all been top shelf. This is a excellent example.
BTW, I got to see John Lee Hooker at the Ashgrove in early '72.

Elvis is Everywhere

Remembering Mojo Nixon!

“When I look out into your eyes out there,
When I look out into your faces,
You know what I see?
I see a little bit of Elvis
In each and every one of you out there”

"Groovin' is Easy" by #TheThirdMind (Yep Roc, 2023)

Didn't think in a million years someone'd think to cover this great, overlooked '68 #ElectricFlag tune. Didn't think anyone could best it, either - but they do

Saw #TheKnitters play on this day back in 1991 at The Palomino Club in North Hollywood. By that point #ExeneCervenka, #JohnDoe and #DaveAlvin were all focusing on solo careers; this would have been an early one-off reunion gig.

I got there late, the club was packed, so I watched on tippy toe from back near the bar. Didn't matter though because the Palomino wasn't big and they played way louder than I was expecting - this wasn't no genteel unplugged set nohow. Lots of cornpone humour was lobbed about, tempos got pushed to breaking points (Dave whined about his hand being tired after "Rock Island Line") and it was a hoot and a half for everyone on/off the stage.
