Both captured from the same scene in Tokimeki Memorial. The 1st image is from the original PC-Engine. And the 2nd is from the PS1 re-release a couple years later.

While the PS1 music and sound is far better, the pixel art shines more on the original. There's an atmospheric blur applied to the background in the PS1 to give more depth to the scene. But it just comes out muddy looking.

Maybe the effect would look better on original hardware, and a CRT. But the original doesn't need either of those things, and still looks better to me. I even prefer the more limited but vibrant colors, like the blue of Shiori's outfit.

Anyway, this has been a critique of a 30 year old dating sim. Thank you.

I probably learned about #otomegames about 15 years ago. It's funny because I started off playing #datingsim on a website I think called English Otome Games. My favorite otome games are Cute Demon Crashers by SugarScript, Ayakashi: Romance Reborn by Voltage, and Magical Paws: Heart Wishes by Visuki.
