😶‍🌫️ DEMYSTIFYING DATA CENTRES:

📱🌳 Settler-capitalism obscures the material processes and social relations that underlie our daily interactions with our phones and our computers: processes grounded in egregious resource consumption, land theft, and the violent repression of Indigenous communities.

The rapid growth of #AI #datacentres, driven by significant private capital investment, is presenting challenges for #insurers. Insurers are offering bespoke policies and exploring asset-backed securitisation, the mismatch between the lifespan of data centres and GPUs, along with the potential for disputes over property valuations, adds complexity to the risk landscape. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/04/06/ai-data-centers-financing-insurance-deals-gpu-debt.html?eicker.news #tech #media #news
Trump's AI data centre push is failing because his tariffs block imports of transformers, switchgear and batteries from China - the same equipment China has made for US data centres for decades. Almost half of planned US data centres for 2026 are delayed or cancelled. US manufacturing cannot fill the gap. https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2026/04/sad-trumps-ai-data-center-push-is-failing-blame-his-own-tariffs/ #AI #DataCentres #Infrastructure
Trump ignores biggest reasons his AI data center buildout is failing

Nearly 50% of data center projects delayed as China holds key to power infrastructure.

Scientists have found an alarming environmental impact of vast data centers

The vast data centers that power artificial intelligence are so energy hungry that they’re heating up their surroundings, according to new research. It’s an alarming finding given the number of data centers is predicted to explode over the next few years.

Agreed. Though there must be a clear understanding of what it is that this opposition is aimed at, towit: GenAI (aka #AISlop on the #fedi) and not the niche #AI that powers such things as medical diagnostics tools, and numerous other dedicated, curated and deterministic AI.

The overall ‘furious opposition’ you’ll find here is to that copyright infringing software commonly found in #AIChatBots which have been proven to ‘make things up’ and in some cases lead to ‘deep depression’ and ‘radicalisation’ with well known consequences.

Another aspect of this opposition has to do with the #infrastructure required for #GenAI (though recent chatbots developed in China and France have been shown to require more frugal requirements) which is impacting access to #water and #energy with obvious negative effects in the communities which host those required #Datacentres.

Last is the economic impact of GenAI systems. The flood of venture capital into GenAI and its infrastructure. The cross ownerships (moving putative money around) among GenAI and ancillary Tech corporations is hyping up a grossly over capitalised market, in effect creating a global financial bubble which is already showing signs of imminent collapse, will very likely drag the global economy crashing or into a prolonged recession.

In essence this is the opposition you will find on the #fediverse. Some can get pretty vocal about it too, but is it any wonder given our politicians, corporate management, corporate #msm, #TechBros and #Billionaires are all hell bent on feeding the bubble regardless of the potential for very dire consequences? Sometimes, it really feels like we’re shouting into the void…

The antidote to this is of course to introduce fact-based discussions about #AI generally, its pros and cons. I guarantee that the #Fedi is up for that, robust discussion grounded in experiencial and fact-based arguments. Maybe this is where you come in Kye …?

#AI #datacentres can warm surrounding areas by up to 9.1°C
Hundreds of millions of people live close enough to data centres used to power AI to feel warmer average temperatures in their local area
They discovered temperatures increased by an average of 2C (3.6F) in the months after an AI #datacenter started operating. In extreme cases, increase in temperature was 9.1C (16.4F). The effect wasn't limited to the immediate surroundings of the data centers: but up to 10km away

It really is time for the Butlerian Jihad, except these things aren't 'Thinking Machines', despite humans having surrendered their thinking to them.

Stop trying to make the Torment Nexus!
