Socken stopfen leicht gemacht mit dem Schlingstich / Darning socks made easy with the buttonhole stitch

My illustration for the »Weimarer Adventskalender« from 2024. And of course the topic of my illustration is again: Sustainability.

Some years ago I started to learn how to repair my clothes by myself. I own a large collection of woolen socks made by my grandma, each pair is prettier than the other. How could I throw them away, just because they had some holes? So I learned different repearing techniques, and tried around a lot. And I think, that using the buttonhole stitch is a very easy and durable technique to stuff holes in your socks.

Repairing clothes for me is one of the most meditative and satisfying activities. Now in winter I always have holes somewhere in my clothes and I just enjoy sitting on the couch, listening to an audiobook, darning and mending. And I feel a deep satisfaction when I once more have managed to repair an item of clothing and can use it a little longer (a tiny victory against capitalism).

By the way it is also a great activity to do with friends together. Sitting together, chatting and darning is not only for grandmas, my grandma says.

So I hope, with my instruction you’ll soon be able to repair your socks by yourself. And maybe you’ll have as much fun as I do.

#darningSocks is my least favorite kind of #mending but I recently learned about the honeycomb darn and finally I've done these socks. (They're handknitted by, I think, my mom from natural dyed wool, that used to be different shades of pink, but mellowed out over the years. I got these socks roughly 14 years ago.)

My son managed to get a hole in his sock, some snapped thread, I think. So I darned it! Do you see it, on the left, in the foot? 😃

I received the most "old Norwegian grandmother' piece of advice for darning socks today, since my hands start to shake trying to hold a darning egg in place - try using a pestle instead.

Who has a pestle just lying around these days?

I mean, I have two but that's besides the point.

Well it looks like the weather has turned for real this time, so today’s project will be pulling out all the hand-knit socks and darning any holes I find! It’ll be a relief to stop trying to find decent cotton store bought socks in my drawer (spring project will probably be to toss em all out and start over, they just don’t last!).
