Nello Scenario Nepali: Le Donne e i Tigri
Rischi Crescenti e Incidente Tragici

Rural women in Nepal increasingly at risk of conflict with wildlife.

In the Nepali Scenario: Women and the Tigers
As Nepal celebrates a remarkable increase in the population of wild tigers, women from rural communities on the margins of the forests are facing growing dangers. The phenomenon of mass male migration abroad has forced many women to take on almost all agricultural and domestic responsibilities. This demographic shift has been described as the “feminization of agriculture” and has pushed women to work in high-risk forest areas for daily subsistence tasks, such as firewood and fodder collection, as reported by correspondent Tulsi Rauniyar for Mongabay.
Rising Risks and a Tragic Incident
Encounter deaths with wildlife typically occur during daily activities. A tragic example is that of Binita Pariyar, a seventeen-year-old from an marginalized Dalit family, killed by a tiger in December 2025 while cutting grass for her livestock. After her death, another five people were killed in the forests surrounding Bardiya National Park in a month.
Recent studies have shown that almost a third of fatal attacks occur during cattle grazing, while another third occurs during grass cutting. Forest department records show that most of the people attacked while collecting grass between 2021 and 2025 were women. The forests they visit are specifically designated for the collection of fodder, firewood, and pasture materials.

3. The "Exorcism" Key

Many Theyyam characters, like #Gulikan (the god of death/time) or Pottan Theyyam, are explicitly "wrathful" or "cleansing" deities. Their role is to absorb the community's suffering and cast out malevolent influences. The word "exorcise" isn't just a pun; it’s a functional description of what a Theyyam god is supposed to do for their village.

The Trance: It’s not "acting." The performers go through days of fasting and isolation. By the time they hit the courtyard at 3:00 AM, the rhythmic Chenda drumming and the heavy, 30kg+ headdress (the mudi) push them into a genuine altered state. They are believed to be "vessels" for the god's spirit.

• It is a thousand-year-old mechanism for social justice and speaking truth to power. Using it to "exorcise" a modern figure of power is actually incredibly consistent with its history.

2. The "Orange" Mechanics

The vibrant orange/red isn't just a stylistic choice.

The Paint: Traditionally made from turmeric (yellow) and lime (which turns it red/orange), it represents Shakti (primordial energy).

1. The "Status Inversion" (The Real Bite)
Theyyam is historically performed by people from marginalized (Dalit/lower caste) communities.

• During the ritual, the performer undergoes a radical status reversal. They cease being a marginalized person and become a Deity (Daivam).

• At this moment, the most powerful people in the village—landowners, high-caste officials—must bow to them, ask for their advice, and even accept their rebukes.
