Yesterday, after I’d posted about the one off Daimler Corsica convertible, @BackFromTheDud mentioned the two-door coupé version of the original Jaguar XJ, which was also available as a Daimler. I’m not sure whether this one, which I saw at the 2023 NEC Classic Motor Show is a Jaguar or a Daimler.
In 1996, Jaguar came up with this one-off Daimler Corsica convertible. The Corsica was produced in order to commemorate the centenary of the founding of Daimler. Daimler-badged Jaguar XJs were sold until 2009. A return for Daimler appears unlikely and now even the future of Jaguar itself seems to be uncertain.
Daimler-badged XJ Jaguars continued to be offered into the 1980s and 1990s, in both the XJ40 and X300 ranges. This 1995 car is a special one-off stretched version of the X300, used by Jaguar’s then-chairman Nick Scheele. It is a smaller-engined (4-litre) Six model - although the bigger V12 engine was still available, if not for much longer, in Double Six Daimlers. Note the distinctive fluted Daimler grille. Seen at the British Motor Museum in 2023.

Not all Jaguars were offered in Daimler-badged form. This unrealised prototype from 1986 explored how a Daimler version of the XJ-S might look. Note the alternative roof-line which does away with the XJ-S’ distinctive ‘flying buttress’ rear pillars. Snapped at the 2023 NEC Classic Motor Show.
I’ve mentioned that most Daimlers from the early sixties onwards were basically rebadged Jaguars, albeit sometimes with more luxurious trim. One exception was the Daimler DS420 limousine produced between 1968 and 1992. This borrowed somewhat from the Jaguar 420G but its extended limousine body was mostly unique. Popular with British and European royalty. I snapped this 1992 car at the British Motor Museum in 2023.
Today, another pre-Jaguar era Daimler, the DE36 Limousine. While Daimler would later bring its lightweight V8 into the Jaguar family, the DE36 is notable for having a rare in-line eight-cylinder engine, in fact the last straight eight fitted to a British car. This 1954 car lives at The Great British Car Journey, and is the final DE36 made.
