#Birds #Vulture #Hawk #Iowa

The theme on today's #DailyWalk was birds in flight. Turkey Vulture, Northern Flicker (probably), and a large hawk.

Horsetail (Equisetum sp.), willows, pond. #DailyWalk

#MarshMadness #Iowa #Tadpole #frogs

Seen on the #DailyWalk: Tadpoles.

These are overwintering tadpoles. Most likely Bullfrog, but I was just reading that Leopard Frog tadpoles will sometimes overwinter, too.

#Birds #Iowa #Colombia

On the #DailyWalk, I spotted this Eastern Wood Peewee by the pond. It's the first one I've ever identified. It looked to me like an Eastern Kingbird, but smaller and slimmer.

These birds overwinter in Colombia and are making the long migration north. This individual might nest here or might still be heading north.

#DailyWalk #Insects #Trees #Iowa

Willow rosette galls caused by the egg-laying activity of a small flying insect (a midge).

#DailyWalk #NativePlants #Iowa

#MarshMadness. The ephemeral waterway below the pond has plenty of water after Thursday’s rain.

#Birds #Geese #Iowa #Spring

On the #DailyWalk, I saw a couple of large groups of Snow Geese flying overhead. The dark individuals are probably the same species, but represent the morph known as the Blue Goose.

#MarshMadness #Pond #Iowa

On the #DailyWalk on a very overcast day…

I startled a half-dozen wild turkeys in the woods. The water in the pond had a greenish cast, especially in the reflections of the willows.
