Special Dishes

Do you or your family make any special dishes for the holidays?

Relatively speaking, no, my family does not make any dishes out of the ordinary on the basis of religion, caste, or other dimensions of diversity. Genetically speaking, the dishes are determined by my family lineage for every holiday event—even Easter, which is not often talked about in the “Holidays” as a time of year.

Love on the Stove: How I Build Festive Memories for My Daughter

Do you or your family make any special dishes for the holidays? Festivals look different in every home. Some houses are filled with big families, noise, laughter, and food cooked in giant pots. But in my home, it’s just me and my daughter — two people, one little kitchen, and a world full of love simmering in every dish. For many people, festivals are about grand celebrations. For me, festivals are moments when I quietly decide, “I want my daughter to feel loved, even if our family is […]

Gemeinsam gut essen

What’s on the menu? Weekly Recap 11/24/2025

Over the last few days, my lovely wife worked on hand-writing the grocery list for our upcoming Thanksgiving dinner.

Here’s what’s on the menu:

  • Turkey
  • Ham
  • Mashed Potatoes
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Mac N Cheese
  • Stuffing
  • Collard Greens
  • Apple Pie

We traded pumpkin pie for apple pie this year. But don’t worry, in order to maintain balance within the universe, we grabbed a pumpkin cheesecake from Trader Joe’s.

If you have a feast planned for later this week, what are your highlights going to be?

Good morning and happy Monday, friends!

For many folks, this week will include a nice break from school or work. A break sounds nice. In fact, sometimes I just want to be like this cat.

Over the past week, I discovered that our local library participates in a program called Hoopla. It’s basically a giant archive of ebooks, audiobooks, and videos. You can access it for free as long as you have… get this… a local library card.

It’s been years since I’ve actually possessed a library card, but I ventured out in a quest.

I returned victoriously with a library card. And it has an actual library card number on the back, which I used for my Hoopla registration. And it WORKED. I don’t think I’ll be checking out any physical books soon… or returning to the local, physical library (which, in our neighborhood… was basically a tiny room with a few books), but I will definitely be spending time perusing all of this new digital content.

Don’t worry, guys. We’re covered on snacks for this week.

On Saturday, after making several trips to various grocery stores, Selene and I popped out for a little dinner.

And on Sunday, we decided to hit up the Annual Gem and Mineral Show.

We were overwhelmed by the vast amounts of beads.

Like… just… so many beads.

I think that’s about all for now. I’ve passed the halfway point on my latest book project, so that means I only have half a book left to write.

But that’s still a lot of writing.

Stay tuned for more soon!

Do you or your family make any special dishes for the holidays?

I am half-Filipino. My mother is from the Philippines and my father, a Malaysian, like me.

Growing up, I was neither close to my mother’s or father’s side. However, between these two, I am somewhat culturally inclined towards my mother’s side through some of her simple heartwarming dishes that she cooked growing up as well as some of the Filipino songs she would play or the Tagalog words she would incorporate in her daily conversations.

Two of the simple dish my mother would prepare would be pasta or bolognese spaghetti and Buko salad.

1. Spaghetti

Originally, spaghetti is a form of pasta and a staple food of traditional Italian cuisine.

However, it also serves as one of the staple Filipino dishes.

My mother would usually make a batch of bolognese spaghetti occasionally and on New Year’s Eve, as that is what my maternal grandmother used to do while she was growing up.

It is rather simple and easy as well and she would go crazy with the cheddar cheese topping. Over the years, as she started to dwell into vegetarianism and eventually become one for a lifetime, she created her own variation of a vegetarian version.

2. Buko Salad

Adapted from https://www.kawalingpinoy.com/buko-salad/

“Buko” salad is a form of Filipino fruit salad.

“Buko” refers to a young coconut fruit and “Buko” salad consists of the young coconut itself.

It is a simple dish which has many variations.

My mother would usually mix with nata de coco of various colours, avoiding the colourless ones, corn, a huge can of mix fruits and other canned fruits before finally mixing it with evaporated milk, cheddar cheese and “buko”.

She will the separate it into containers and freeze it and have it on New Year’s Eve.

Growing up, my family would be seated at the dining table with other dishes prepared on New Year’s Eve for us to dine in together at midnight and every year, these two dishes remains a staple.

Do you or your family make any special dishes for the holidays?

Daily writing prompt

I’m thinking, I’m thinking. I don’t think there is anything specific to any holidays, but there are a couple of things that we usually have that we happen to usually have around the holidays.

Jen makes deviled eggs and my step kids devour them like their lives depend on it. I don’t think she does it for the holidays, but that is when she usually makes them. In fact, she whipped up a bach for Thanksgiving and Bellana and Harry attacked them with merciless vengeance.

Jen’s family traditions include a christmas eve party and that party includes a lot of food. Much of it is prepared in an army of crock pots. Jen and her mother make a couple of types of chicken wings and meatballs that we generally don’t have at any time of year. Are we having them for the holiday or are we having them because of the holiday? I don’t know. I just know that it’s all delicious and it makes me feel like christmas, so I think it counts either way.

So, do we have any special dishes for the holidays? Yeah, I guess we do. Cool, huh? Happy/Merry.
