NON-CHEMICAL M.E.D.S by Veronica Smith
Daily writing prompt What strategies do you use to maintain your health and well-being?
View all responses I have not been to a medical doctor in years! I do not take Pharma drugs either, despite my age. My secret? M.E.D.S!
That stands for:-
MEDITATION
EXERCISE
DIET
SPIRITUAL PRACTICE
I cannot claim credit for developing this system but it is one used by most people in my Shamanic Circle and it certainly works for me!
Of course, all people are different. What works for one person, may not work for some-one else. So, in this post, I will share with you what works for me and hopefully give you some pointers about what is available to you, without costing a fortune. It does not involve travel to far-away places, or studying with expensive “Gurus”. It just needs for you to be MINDFUL in what you do in every day life.
The object of MEDITATION is to calm the Monkey Mind, so that you become aware of what is happening inside of you, rather than being distracted by what is happening around you. Meditation can center around a prayer book, a lighted candle, incense, crystals, a tree, whatever helps you to concentrate on Inner Peace.
Personally, when I meditate, I think about the Reiki principals:
“Just for today, do not Anger [about the Past, which cannot be changed]; Just for today, do not worry [about the Future, which has not happened yet and may not even happen at all];
Be kind to yourself and to others;
Be grateful for what you already have [instead of hankering after unnecessary status symbols];
Do a good job of your work today {even if you don’t like the job, be mindful of what you are doing and how you are doing it].
EXERCISE is something that is heavily promoted these days but you do not have to pump iron or kill yourself with jogging or cycling! Exercise can be as simple as getting outside in the fresh air, whenever you get the chance. If you are in the city, find the nearest green space, be it a public park or roof garden or shopping mall surrounded by plants. I have always found that walking at a gentle pace helps me to mull over worries and put things into perspective. If the shops are not too far away, consider walking there instead of taking the car. Other options are walking bare-foot on the grass or along a sandy beach, feeling the sun on your skin and the earth beneath your feet. Sunshine is a wonderful healer!
DIET may seem an obvious one: being mindful of what you eat and drink, cutting out coffee and alcohol, red meat, dairy, tobacco, whatever is deemed “not good for us”! However, I was reminded recently that diet covers more than just food and drink! It also covers how we spend our free time! Are we on a constant “diet” of TV? Always on the Internet / IPhone? Obsessed with addictive substances of all kinds, including porn and gambling? Think about it! The key here is to find BALANCE, both with what we are eating and drinking and how we choose to spend our free time.
SPIRITUAL PRACTICE: As I have said before, everyone is different and has different needs. Some need formal religious ceremonies and group activities, in order to feel spiritually connected. Others prefer a more personal approach, working on their own and performing rituals in private. Personally, I am a Flame Keeper of Saint Brighid and it is my turn to “tend the Flame” every 20 days. That is just one of several Spiritual Practices that I take part in, including Shamanic Drumming Circles, although I was brought up to say the Rosary and still do, when I feel the need. The point is to do whatever feels right for YOU! It is unwise (and unsatisfying) to blindly jump in to a new cult, simply because it is fashionable!
So, this is the simple strategy that I use in order to maintain my health and well-being. I hope that it gives you some positive ideas. Be happy! Stay well! Dance a lot!
