1. The Spicy Spectacle

You pride yourself on your tolerance for heat, so when the friendly street vendor in Bangkok offers you a taste of their “mild” curry, you confidently accept with a smile. But as the first fiery bite hits your tongue like a flamethrower in a chili factory, you quickly realize that you may have underestimated the true meaning of “Thai spicy.” Cue the frantic gulps of water and the impromptu fire-breathing performance that leaves your fellow diners both impressed and slightly concerned for your well-being.

2. The Mystery Meat Mishap

You’re feeling adventurous, so when the menu at that quaint little bistro in Paris lists “escargot” as the house specialty, you decide to throw caution to the wind and give it a try. But as you take your first tentative bite of the slimy delicacy, you can’t shake the sinking feeling that you may have just eaten something that was alive mere moments ago. Cue the existential crisis and the fervent vow to stick to more familiar fare for the remainder of your culinary adventures.

3. The Cultural Conundrum

You’re determined to immerse yourself in the local culture, so when your gracious host in Tokyo presents you with a steaming bowl of what can only be described as “mystery soup,” you graciously accept with a smile and a bow. But as you tentatively take a sip and try to identify the various unidentifiable floating objects, you realize that sometimes, cultural immersion comes with a side of gastrointestinal distress. Cue the polite nods and the silent prayers for a speedy recovery as you struggle to maintain your composure in the face of culinary adversity.

4. The Street Food Fiasco

You’ve heard rave reviews about the street food scene in Marrakech, so when you stumble upon a bustling market teeming with tantalizing smells and exotic flavors, you can’t resist the siren call of the street vendors. But as you dig into your first bite of falafel, you quickly realize that street food adventures come with their own set of risks – namely, the inevitable battle with food poisoning that leaves you regretting every culinary decision you’ve ever made.

The Caramelized Alibi

The new mystery in Speranza: Christmas murders with a tad of Caramel..

The autumn sun in Speranza was the color of aged parchment, casting long, lazy shadows across the village market as the first hint of December’s frost began to bite. In the heart of the village, the grand Christmas tree stood as a towering spire of green, but its festive beauty was eclipsed by a scene of magnificent chaos. Beneath the lowest branches, nestled amidst a dusty pile of forgotten histories and the vibrant silk wrappers of the season, lay the body of the visiting gourmet critic.

A Bittersweet Discovery

The air around the Piazza, usually thick with the scent of Anna’s roasted coffee and Altea’s fine tobacco, was now cloyed with the smell of burnt sugar and sea salt.

The victim was found slumped against the tree’s base, his face serene but his eyes wide and unseeing.

He clutched a “Caramel Gold” bar from Marisa’s Mint Chocolate house, the silver-wrapped treat half-eaten.

A faint, sweet, floral scent—reminiscent of hyacinth but with a sharp, chemical undertone—hung in the frigid air.

Ispettore Salomone arrived looking profoundly weary, his patience already thinner than a poorly brewed Earl Grey.

The Feline Sentinels

Back at La Pagina che Fa le Fusa, my sanctuary of rosemary and old paper, the atmosphere was one of quiet tension. My two furry proprietors, sensing a dissonant note in the village’s harmony, began their own investigation.

Toe, the sleek black Maine Coon, ignored the festive bustle and began an obsessive ritual of batting at a small, ornate silver sachet he had found snagged in the tree’s tinsel.

Ashwaganda, the ginger sage with amber eyes that held the wisdom of ages, sat pointedly in front of a new pot of calendula flowers, letting out a soft, insistent meow.

He stared directly at the “Caramel Gold” wrapper I had brought back, his “gold stare” signaling a truth hidden in the sugar.

The Wisdom of the Blue Book

I turned to my chair of bordeaux velvet and opened the strange book I had bought for a handful of coins: Days of your Dreams. Bound in faded peacock-blue leather and penned in shimmering silver ink, its pages rustled with a soft, dry scent of pressed flowers. I searched for an entry on “Gold” and “Salt,” and the script began to shift into a cryptic prophecy:

“Where the serpent eats its tail, the sweet gold is snared. Look not for what was taken, but for the ‘smoke’ that never burns. The truth is found where the earth is youngest and the fox hides its dye.”

The Shadow on the Threshold

The investigation took a chilling turn when the door to the shop—hidden under an ivy-covered stone arch—creaked open. A man stood there, as smooth and polished as river stones, holding a silver-stamped ledger that mirrored the emblem of a sleeping cat and a key.

“Signorina Hopes,” he boomed, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceiling like a retired opera diva’s. “The caramel was a masterful forgery, a distraction for the real prize hidden within the tree’s heart.”

Moira felt a jolt go through her. This was not just a case of a poisoned critic; it was the violent beginning of a new story, one involving a contested inheritance, a forger’s touch, and the “lullaby of death” hidden in a scent of caramel.

My First Night Shift Covering Medical 4 / Medical 5 / Infectious Disease Ward In Sarawak General Hospital – Housemanship Diaries

Related Posts:

Around my third month in the Department of Medical at Sarawak General Hospital, I was reallocated to Medical 4 which is the “Nephrology Ward” meaning patients who are admitted with newly diagnosed chronic kidney disease or have underlying kidney pathology requiring biopsy or haemodialysis (HD support) but clinically stable as in not requiring oxygen support, not in sepsis or not requiring medications for blood pressure support are admitted here.

I will explain more about that ward in another article.

Anyway, back to the reason for this article, being allocated in this ward meant that I had to cover not just this ward, Medical 4 but also Medical 5 as well as the Infectious Disease Ward during my night shift.

In the Department of Medical, the night shift is from 8pm till 10am the following day.

While I was allocated here, I was blessed enough to have a few taggers in the ward and tagging is from 7am till 10pm.

Thus, upon heading down at 8pm, there are usually a few people in Medical 4 till 10pm. Thus, upon entering my shift, I would first head over to Level 9 to place my bags, pop into Medical 4, for a while and then head over to Medical 5 to take the coming morning bloods.

Upon completion, I would then head over to Medical 4 and begin my coming mornings there. Usually while I’m taking my coming mornings, new patients will come in and thus I would transfer in at the same time.

Upon completion of my coming mornings in Medical 4, I would usually send my bloods at around 2am and then head over to the Infectious Disease Ward to take the coming mornings.

In between I would be free but sometimes I would receive call for new transfer ins at Medical 4 and Medical 5.

At 5-6am, I start running the blood gases. Usually when I take the coming mornings bloods, I would take the blood gases as well and keep it in a separate syringe in the cooler.

Surviving the night shift initially was intimidating as I have yet to experience it and Medical 4 and Medical 5 were located far apart from each other.

My main concern was if something were to occur at both wards at the same time.

Thankfully, my experiences were mostly good and I enjoyed every night shift I’ve experienced thus far in this ward.

Title: Operation Sindoor – A Mission of Bravery and Humanity

Daily writing prompt What was the last live performance you saw? View all responses

In the early days of May 2024, the world witnessed yet another example of India’s unwavering commitment to protecting its citizens, no matter where they are. Operation Sindoor, a meticulously planned evacuation mission, became a symbol of courage, coordination, and humanitarian values as it brought home stranded Indians from the war-torn region of Sudan.

The Need for Operation Sindoor

Sudan had plunged into a severe conflict between rival military factions, leading to chaos, violence, and a breakdown of civil services. With airports shut down and roads under constant threat, thousands of foreign nationals, including many Indians, were trapped with no safe way out.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the Government of India launched Operation Sindoor under the leadership of the Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian Armed Forces. The mission’s primary goal: evacuate all Indian nationals from Sudan and bring them back home safely.

How the Operation Was Carried Out

Executing such a mission in an active conflict zone is never easy. Yet, Operation Sindoor stood out due to its speed, precision, and coordination. The Indian Air Force played a crucial role, deploying C-130J Super Hercules aircraft, which made multiple sorties into the danger zone. Meanwhile, the Indian Navy’s INS Sumedha was also sent to the Port of Sudan to facilitate the sea evacuation of citizens.

Diplomatic efforts played an equally important role. Indian embassies in the region, especially in Saudi Arabia, collaborated with local governments to secure safe corridors for evacuating civilians. The operation also involved using buses to transport people to safe zones before airlifting or transferring them via sea.

The Human Side of the Mission

Behind the headlines and military logistics were stories of families reunited, lives saved, and hope restored. Many of those rescued were students, professionals, and workers who had lost all contact with the outside world due to power cuts and internet blackouts.

Videos and images shared online showed exhausted but relieved passengers waving the Indian flag and thanking the government and armed forces for their timely rescue. The name “Operation Sindoor” itself symbolized protection, safety, and the sacred duty of the nation to care for its people—just like the sindoor symbolizes commitment and care in Indian culture.

A Testament to India’s Global Commitment

Operation Sindoor is not India’s first evacuation mission, and it certainly won’t be the last. From Operation Raahat in Yemen (2015) to Operation Ganga in Ukraine (2022), India has repeatedly proven that it stands by its people, even in the most dangerous circumstances.

But more than just a rescue mission, Operation Sindoor reminded the world that humanitarianism transcends borders. It showed that in times of crisis, timely action, diplomatic strength, and human compassion can come together to make the impossible possible.

Final Thoughts

Operation Sindoor was more than just an evacuation—it was a story of resilience, responsibility, and national pride. It stands as a shining example of how India continues to evolve not just as a regional power, but as a nation deeply committed to its values and its people.

Daily writing prompt What details of your life could you pay more attention to? View all responses

I’ve always been a foodie.

I enjoy my going on food trips with my family or friends. If I’m bored or sleepy, I would look for a snack, which again is well, food.

Thus, over the years, the weight started piling up and towards the end of primary school, I noticed that my weight posed an issue. As a child, I was overweight.

I recalled visiting the doctor once when I was in primary school coz I was unwell and he made me stand on the weighing scale and perhaps he did say more but at a young age, all I remembered was him yelling “Your child is FAT. FAT. FAT. FAT. F-A-T, FAT!”, all throughout my checkup and as I was leaving his office with my mom.

It felt like as if I had committed a felony. When in reality, he was trying to point out on how unhealthy it is for me, somehow in a rather direct way.

Over the years, I’ve struggled with my weight. It was never constant and always up and down. I’ve tried various diets which didn’t stuck long.

The only time I properly lost weight was when I started my housemanship journey. Amidst me eating at the wrong time, somehow the weight just magically went off. Firstly, perhaps I was too occupied with work to eat properly, hence, unknowingly I tend to practice intermittent fasting almost everyday and secondly, my movements have increased dramatically. Walking above 15k steps per day was a norm.

However, as I progressed throughout my postings, I learnt how to fit eating back into my busy schedule and the weight started piling back slowly.

I brought the matter up to a dear friend and she mentioned that perhaps, I could try controlling my food portion. I reflected and realised that all these while, I’ve been consuming food in the usual portion which didn’t had an effect on me previously as I was constantly on the move.

Thus, if there is something I seriously need to pay more attention to, it would be my food choices as well as the portion. Food is extremely delicious and good. Sadly, I would say that I fall into the category of “Live to Eat” rather than “Eat to Live”.

Hence, it’s time for me to take charge and make a change towards my food choices and start my journey towards a healthier life.

Paediatrics Posting. The posting of tiny human beings.

Looking back, I feared entering into the Paediatrics posting. I think I say that for almost every posting.

However, it was one that I fell in love with before I even off-tagged, as mentioned in one of my articles previously.

The stress level was not as bad as it was in other postings mainly because we were dealing with children. Not to say that treating them is easier, in fact it isn’t as they tend to fight back, scream or cry a lot.

I mean they’re just children.

But perhaps when I do come to work, the smile on their cute faces were enough to alleviate some of the stress and checking them clinically involves a skill as they are easily triggered.

I would find myself playing with them or calming them down. Most of the time if I were to auscultate them, they would either start playing with it, swat it away or start crying.

The Paediatrics posting is the place I started eating again amidst the stress. Irregardless of the amount of patients and work to do, there is always time for lunch or at least our superiors will make sure of that.

It was also the place where I enjoyed the long rounds in the morning and afternoon as well as I would present to specialists.

I made a good friend with a medical officer who I still keep contact with albeit having left the posting. I enjoyed the days where I would be allocated to work with him.

Having worked both in the general ward and nursery ward, the experiences were different but enjoyable nonetheless.

If there is a posting I wouldn’t mind repeating, it is the Paediatric Posting and I hope you do or will or had enjoyed this posting just as much as I did.

If you didn’t need sleep, what would you do with all the extra time?

If only we had endless energy and didn’t require sleep

Then we’d be robots

In this evolving society whereby work is prioritised and hustle culture is looked up upon, we tend to work from the early hours till late night. Well, most of us, especially when we’ve started a new job in a new company or industry.

Working as a House Officer in the hospital setting, the work never ends nor does the patients that comes in.

In the Surgical Department, our shift is from 7am till 7pm for the morning shift and 7pm till 9am for the night shift

The reality is that most of us come way too early just to get a head start on our reviews which most of the time is not completed, followed by completing the active job-lists, tending to new patients followed by afternoon reviews and further active job-lists and finally oncall reviews.

Then after that is done, we head home.

The tiredness stems from overwork, lack of proper sleep or rest which immediately leads to burn out.

Sometimes we just want to do more or lend a helping hand to another fellow colleague but at times it is just simply tiring and our minds and bodies are too tired for continuation of the same work.

After which, we return home and is most of the time too spent to even want to consider a night out since we would return late even if our schedule is till 7pm.

But there are things that I would love to do yet it is beyond my energy capacity for the day.

However, what if that wasn’t the issue?

1. Studying

Photo by Isaac Taylor on Pexels.com

Yes. First of all studying

Ever since I’ve started my housemanship journey, I’ve been omitting studying in order to prioritise work.

Well, in reality, after work, I’m just too mentally spent to even consider sitting myself down to just read. I’m not that disciplined.

However, upon being questioned during rounds, I find myself lost for words and unable to answer properly. I’m able to just give the “gist of it”.

If I had unlimited energy and didn’t require sleep, I would definitely dedicate my time after work during midnight in books and notes.

2. Learning another language

Photo by Polina Tankilevitch on Pexels.com

I have always been fascinated by languages and if there is one superhuman ability I wished I have, it would be the ability to pick up languages quickly after listening to the locals speaking the language.

However, in reality, that doesn’t occur, or maybe it does to a rare number of people but I’m definitely not one of them.

Anyway, throughout high school, I’ve enjoyed learning new languages and I always wished that I devout more time towards studying them or practicing them.

3. Actually staying back late to help out at work

Photo by Mikhail Nilov on Pexels.com

I would actually love to.

Back when I first started my housemanship journey in my first posting, Orthopaedics, I used to that, at first because I was interested in learning up the fundamental skill of being a House Officer such as taking bloods and how to handle the ward better while working the night shift.

After a while, I started staying back merely to keep my friends company because in reality after going back, I’m not sure what to do and during my off days, they are at work. Thus, I was simply bored.

Now, the tiredness is overwhelming and I simply look forward to going back because I know that the following morning I would have to leave extremely early and if I do not give myself the minimal amount of rest my body needs, I will collapse.

That’s about it. Personally, if I had endless energy, I would cater it towards the things that I enjoy doing which are listed above.

Thus, during that day time, I could solely devout myself to work while at work or spend it with loved ones.

However, life is not as such and we need our rest or we will go haywire.

Daily writing prompt What was the last live performance you saw? View all responses

In my younger days I went to clubs to hear live music all the time. Almost once or twice a week. It was basically my social life. As I got older the frequency was vastly reduced. After the pandemic hit the frequency dropped to a hair above zero.

I went to the Letters to Cleo annual Thanksgiving homecoming show back in November and it was pretty much perfect. That was the last live performance… until four days ago. Scroll back a little, you’ll see it. My daughter, Bellana, performed with the Vermont Symphony Orchestra four days ago and you bet your sweet music loving ass I was in the crowd having my mind blown by the Mozart and being so overcome with pride for her that I was close to spontaneously combusting. Literally. Boom. It was amazing.

My step daughter… that little kid I first met when she was six years old and in first grade… one of the two people who have allowed me to be a part of their life as they grew from little person to adult… the woman who used to be the girl who I’ve been blessed to be able to hear sing for most of her life… sang in the choir with a freaking symphony orchestra performing a Mozart masterpiece.

That was my most recent live performance, all of four days ago, and damn it if that is going to be tough to top.
