The Red Dirt Audit

The neon sign of the servo flickered against the vast, bruised sky of the Outback, casting a rhythmic, sickly green glow over the red dust. The Three Best Friends—Liam, Dax, and Dev—had been driving for ten hours, their old 4WD chockers with server-grade hardware and a beat-up esky full of lukewarm water. They were performing the ultimate hard yakka: tracking a digital ghost to a physical location.

“Fair dinkum, this place is isolated,” Liam muttered, stepping out into the dry heat. He adjusted his glasses, his mind still racing with the content audit he’d been performing on the fly. He knew that to beat the Raven, they had to be beyond reproach. He had spent the drive ensuring their own documentation followed the most rigorous standards, providing informative, unique page titles for every log entry they created. He knew that for each web page, they needed a short title that described the content and distinguished it from others.

Dax climbed out of the passenger seat, immediately checking his handheld light-meter. “She’ll be right, Liam,” he said, though his eyes were fixed on the servo’s flickering signage. Even here, Dax couldn’t stop being a designer. He noticed the signage lacked sufficient contrast between the foreground and background, a cardinal sin in his book. He knew that foreground text needs to have sufficient contrast with background colors to be readable for people like Elias or Lexie.

The Terminal in the Dust
Inside the servo, the air was thick with the smell of deep-fryer oil and diesel. In the back corner, next to a rack of faded bathers and fishing lure, sat a heavy, industrial-grade terminal. It was humming with a low-frequency vibration that made the floorboards rattle.

“There it is,” Dev whispered. He moved toward the machine, his fingers already itching to check the code. “The Raven’s physical gateway.”

Dev knew that to dismantle this, he would have to use appropriate mark-up for headings, lists, and tables to understand the machine’s hidden structure. He reached for the keyboard, but stopped. The screen was a nightmare of unnecessarily complex data blocks.

“It’s a trap,” Dev said. “Look at the interface. They haven’t provided clear and consistent navigation options. There’s no site map, no search, just a single, pulsing cursor. It’s designed to make you feel lost”.

Decoding the Raven’s Form
A form suddenly popped up on the screen, demanding an administrative bypass code. It was a masterpiece of inaccessible design:

The form elements did not include clearly associated labels.

There were no instructions or guidance to help users complete the form.

The input requirement for the date format was not described.

The system used a CAPTCHA that was purely visual, with no audio alternative for someone like Lakshmi.

“You little ripper,” Dax whispered, but not in a good way. “They’re using color alone to convey information here. The ‘Required’ fields are just red boxes with no asterisks or labels. If you can’t see that specific shade of red, you’re stuffed”.

Liam stepped forward, his eyes narrowing. “I can fix the content. Dev, get me into the markup.”

Dev bypassed the visual CAPTCHA by injecting a script that identified the non-text content through its metadata, though the Raven had tried to hide it. As the code bloomed across the screen, the trio saw the “Raven’s” true face. The “Shadow of the Raven’s Wing” was a script that intentionally removed the lang attribute from the html tag, making it impossible for screen readers to identify the primary language of the page.

The Audit Begins
“We need to audit this and flip it,” Liam commanded. “Dax, check the viewports.”

Dax began testing how the page information presented in different sized viewports. He ensured that when font size was increased by at least 200%, the content didn’t clip or require horizontal scrolling. “The Raven’s site breaks at mobile sizes,” Dax reported. “It’s not responsive design; it’s a digital wall”.

Liam focused on the text. He began rewriting the Raven’s cryptic error messages. Instead of saying “System Error 404-X,” he provided specific, understandable explanations and suggested corrections. He wrote in short, clear sentences and paragraphs, ensuring the information was as simple as possible for the context.

Dev, meanwhile, was doing the hard yakka in the backend. He was ensuring that every interactive element was keyboard accessible, especially the custom-made buttons the Raven had hidden in

tags. He used tabindex=”0″ to add those elements into the navigation order so they could receive focus.

“I’m also adding WAI-ARIA to provide information on the function and state of these custom widgets,” Dev grunted. “The Raven used aria-expanded=”false” on elements that were clearly open. It was a deliberate attempt to confuse assistive technology”.

The Raven Speaks
Suddenly, the terminal’s speakers crackled to life. It was an audio-only file, a podcast-style message with no transcript provided.

“They’re pulling a swifty,” Liam said, reaching for his headset. “They think because there’s no text, we can’t index the threat.”

“No dramas,” Dev replied. He quickly ran a speech-to-text algorithm, creating a real-time transcript that included not just the spoken information, but also the important sounds—like the distant caw of a bird in the background.

The transcript read: “You think you’re clever with your WCAG guidelines. But the desert doesn’t care about meaningful sequence. The sand doesn’t have a logical reading order. You’re carrying on like a pork chop in a world that has already moved past you”.

The Counter-Strike
The Three Best Friends didn’t flinch. They knew that providing easily identifiable feedback was the key to a successful interaction. They weren’t going to let the Raven’s unnecessarily technical language stop them.

“Dev, use the progressive enhancement strategy,” Liam said. “Ensure the core functionality is available regardless of the technology the Raven is using to block us.”

Dax added whitespace and proximity to the new interface they were building over the Raven’s ruins, making the relationships between the content more apparent. He styled the headings to group the related content, reducing clutter and making it easier for the next person who stumbled upon this servo to understand what was happening.

As the sun began to rise over the Outback, the terminal finally let out a long, defeated beep. The “Shadow” was lifted. The form now had clearly associated labels for every control. The images had meaningful text alternatives. The link text was meaningful, describing exactly where the user would go next.

“Good on ya, team,” Liam said, wiping sweat from his brow. “We just turned a ‘rejected status’ claim into a fully approved, accessible reality”.

“But the Raven is still out there,” Dev reminded them, pointing to a set of coordinates that had just appeared on the screen, marked clearly with a descriptive label. “And it looks like the next stop is an abandoned opal mine.”

Liam looked at his friends, then back at the esky. “Well, it’s going to be a long drive. But she’ll be right”.

My Reflection Of 2025

Related Posts:

2025, was indeed a year.

The year started out great, I worked on New Year’s Day as usual in the Department of Medical and in April, I entered into my final posting, the Emergency and Trauma Department. In May, I attended my best friend’s wedding.

In July, I completed my internship and received my full registration under the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC) as well as my Annual Practicing Certificate (APC) and started locumming during my holidays back home and I also started floating as a Medical Officer in the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. It was a steep learning curve for me, transitioning from a House Officer into a Medical Officer. The anxiety increased and I was constantly tired. I remembered my love for medicine and service fading to the point I took a long break in October to recharge and reflect.

2025 was also the year, I handed in my 30-days-notice to resign but revoke it the following day. Perhaps it was too much for me, although the working environment and superiors were more than sweet and kind. Physically, I was catching up but mentally, I was fading away.

Looking back, thankfully, I did not. I celebrated my birthday before travelling back to Kuching the following day. 2025 was also the year when my relationship ended. It was a good and lovely 19 months. Perhaps, it was just time.

November was the month I received my letter stating that I will receive my placement and I needed to report for duty on the 24th of November 2025. One thing for sure, I was sure to continue serving in Sarawak. The place? Unknown yet.

On the 18th of November, I found out that I would need to report to the Health Division of Bintulu on the 24th of November 2025.

Bintulu, that’s around 7 hours drive from Kuching. I didn’t have a place to stay nor a car and my things were all unpacked and I was just extremely busy. I packed whatever I could, shipped some boxes back home, those that I managed to do and on the 23rd of November, I flew to Bintulu.

Thankfully, the doctor-in-charge of the Health Division was kind enough to let me know which place or clinic that I would be placed at.

Yes, clinic setting. I did not apply for a clinic setting which so happened to be what many others in my batch longed for. Surprisingly, I got it!

Considering the state of my mental health, I was more than ecstatic to accept it.

2025 was also the year I moved and started working in a new place and also one that speaks a different dialect. I started doing oncalls as well and surprisingly, adapted very quickly into a General Practitioner’s setting as well as the new place. I also met another colleague who was previously my medical officer in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology when I was a House Officer and made new friends and acquaintances.

Overall, 2025 was a mixed of both good and bad experiences. I felt both the highs and also went through a period of low mood. New people entered my life, some stayed and some also left. Nevertheless, I am thankful for all the experiences I went through as well as the lessons learnt.

Hopefully, I can learn from the errors that I have made and grow, making me into a better person.

Thank you 2025. Now, it’s time to move on, to 2026.

Abrazos, amigos y amigas.

Daily writing prompt What details of your life could you pay more attention to? View all responses

I’ve always been a foodie.

I enjoy my going on food trips with my family or friends. If I’m bored or sleepy, I would look for a snack, which again is well, food.

Thus, over the years, the weight started piling up and towards the end of primary school, I noticed that my weight posed an issue. As a child, I was overweight.

I recalled visiting the doctor once when I was in primary school coz I was unwell and he made me stand on the weighing scale and perhaps he did say more but at a young age, all I remembered was him yelling “Your child is FAT. FAT. FAT. FAT. F-A-T, FAT!”, all throughout my checkup and as I was leaving his office with my mom.

It felt like as if I had committed a felony. When in reality, he was trying to point out on how unhealthy it is for me, somehow in a rather direct way.

Over the years, I’ve struggled with my weight. It was never constant and always up and down. I’ve tried various diets which didn’t stuck long.

The only time I properly lost weight was when I started my housemanship journey. Amidst me eating at the wrong time, somehow the weight just magically went off. Firstly, perhaps I was too occupied with work to eat properly, hence, unknowingly I tend to practice intermittent fasting almost everyday and secondly, my movements have increased dramatically. Walking above 15k steps per day was a norm.

However, as I progressed throughout my postings, I learnt how to fit eating back into my busy schedule and the weight started piling back slowly.

I brought the matter up to a dear friend and she mentioned that perhaps, I could try controlling my food portion. I reflected and realised that all these while, I’ve been consuming food in the usual portion which didn’t had an effect on me previously as I was constantly on the move.

Thus, if there is something I seriously need to pay more attention to, it would be my food choices as well as the portion. Food is extremely delicious and good. Sadly, I would say that I fall into the category of “Live to Eat” rather than “Eat to Live”.

Hence, it’s time for me to take charge and make a change towards my food choices and start my journey towards a healthier life.

Sometime ago, I wrote about “The Small Change I Hope My Blog Would Make“, whereby I mentioned that with every article written and uploaded on this website would spread some form of comfort and positivity, especially within the community of junior doctors.

Perhaps I’m just simply being optimistic. I have to. That keeps me going, even on difficult days to the point it has become a default reflex for me.

Nonetheless, I love to write and sometimes I do get lost that I tend to deviate from the topic at times and divert back to the main topic at hand.

Living in this world which has its flaws and problems at every corner, I try to see the good aspect of things and thus, I try to end my articles on a good note or some encouragement, which is mainly directed at me actually. However, I never know who may be reading my written articles and perhaps just need some encouragement and kind words at the moment.

It serves as a “happy ending” just like a fairytale in which I escape in one too many times.

Daily writing prompt What would your life be like without music? View all responses

Utterly boring.

As far as I could recall, I have always associated studying with music.

Perhaps it is because while growing up, my mom had always filled the house with music and made me sit at a corner to study whether I liked it or not, I had to study.

Eventually, I’ve grown used to, to studying with music or reading with music.

In high school, I discovered the kind of music that I like as well as the suitable time for me to study.

Thus, music and studying goes hand-in-hand or I will not be able to focus.

Eventually, I shift to Podcasts and Audiobooks while I am going about doing my chores or cooking, I am either listening to these or music.

Even my daily morning writing has jazz or lo-fi playing in the background.

There are days of course when I do not feel like listening to my music or is simply not in the mood for other musics.

Thus, “lo-fi” or “jazz” are my go-to. Still musical nevertheless.

If you didn’t need sleep, what would you do with all the extra time?

If only we had endless energy and didn’t require sleep

Then we’d be robots

In this evolving society whereby work is prioritised and hustle culture is looked up upon, we tend to work from the early hours till late night. Well, most of us, especially when we’ve started a new job in a new company or industry.

Working as a House Officer in the hospital setting, the work never ends nor does the patients that comes in.

In the Surgical Department, our shift is from 7am till 7pm for the morning shift and 7pm till 9am for the night shift

The reality is that most of us come way too early just to get a head start on our reviews which most of the time is not completed, followed by completing the active job-lists, tending to new patients followed by afternoon reviews and further active job-lists and finally oncall reviews.

Then after that is done, we head home.

The tiredness stems from overwork, lack of proper sleep or rest which immediately leads to burn out.

Sometimes we just want to do more or lend a helping hand to another fellow colleague but at times it is just simply tiring and our minds and bodies are too tired for continuation of the same work.

After which, we return home and is most of the time too spent to even want to consider a night out since we would return late even if our schedule is till 7pm.

But there are things that I would love to do yet it is beyond my energy capacity for the day.

However, what if that wasn’t the issue?

1. Studying

Photo by Isaac Taylor on Pexels.com

Yes. First of all studying

Ever since I’ve started my housemanship journey, I’ve been omitting studying in order to prioritise work.

Well, in reality, after work, I’m just too mentally spent to even consider sitting myself down to just read. I’m not that disciplined.

However, upon being questioned during rounds, I find myself lost for words and unable to answer properly. I’m able to just give the “gist of it”.

If I had unlimited energy and didn’t require sleep, I would definitely dedicate my time after work during midnight in books and notes.

2. Learning another language

Photo by Polina Tankilevitch on Pexels.com

I have always been fascinated by languages and if there is one superhuman ability I wished I have, it would be the ability to pick up languages quickly after listening to the locals speaking the language.

However, in reality, that doesn’t occur, or maybe it does to a rare number of people but I’m definitely not one of them.

Anyway, throughout high school, I’ve enjoyed learning new languages and I always wished that I devout more time towards studying them or practicing them.

3. Actually staying back late to help out at work

Photo by Mikhail Nilov on Pexels.com

I would actually love to.

Back when I first started my housemanship journey in my first posting, Orthopaedics, I used to that, at first because I was interested in learning up the fundamental skill of being a House Officer such as taking bloods and how to handle the ward better while working the night shift.

After a while, I started staying back merely to keep my friends company because in reality after going back, I’m not sure what to do and during my off days, they are at work. Thus, I was simply bored.

Now, the tiredness is overwhelming and I simply look forward to going back because I know that the following morning I would have to leave extremely early and if I do not give myself the minimal amount of rest my body needs, I will collapse.

That’s about it. Personally, if I had endless energy, I would cater it towards the things that I enjoy doing which are listed above.

Thus, during that day time, I could solely devout myself to work while at work or spend it with loved ones.

However, life is not as such and we need our rest or we will go haywire.

Daily writing prompt What do you do to be involved in the community? View all responses

I sometimes respond to these questions of the day by saying I am not playing along. Usually the reason is because I have an answer but don’t want to share it with the public universe. Today I am not playing along for a different reason… the reason is because I just don’t have an answer.

I thought about it and I guess I am just not involved with my community. We were to a small extent when the kids were little. We went to school functions, we participated in youth sports, we showed our faces outside of our house. Those sorts of things. Now that the kids are grown ups? I vote. That’s a way to be involved in the community, I guess. When that schmuck set off an M80 in the middle of our street that one night I went outside to investigate and talk to the cops along with the rest of the neighbors. That’s being involved I guess.

Other than little things like those? No, nothing I can think of. I put out the garbage barrels and take them in after the pick up. I pay my taxes. I was available for jury duty yesterday but the state sent me that magical letter saying I didn’t have to show up. That’s about it.

I mean, I am here if anyone needs anything. Like, if anyone wants a bluesy lead guitarist for some local event I am your guy. Beyond that? I’m probably just going to stay at home like a normal middle aged red head. That’s just the way it is, right?
