My First Hour Of The Day

What are your morning rituals? What does the first hour of your day look like?

By default I rise around 4-5am. Perhaps out of habit as I usually take my time in the morning. Sadly, this also happens during my off days even when my alarms are off. My body clock is somehow tuned to waking up at such.

As mentioned, I take my time upon waking up. Thus, upon waking up, the rain sounds which I fall asleep to would be playing in the background and I would sit by the side of my bed and slowly make my way to my kitchen which is just across my bed, since I live in a studio unit and put my kettle to boil.

The kettle is usually filled the night before and hence, one thing less for me to think in the morning. This is then followed by my morning bathroom rituals and brushing my teeth.

Usually by then, I would have been much more awake and proceed to consume my iron tablet, vitamin C and making my morning coffee which is a mixture of 3-in-1 sachet and a teaspoon of black coffee since I prefer an even stronger coffee.

If I were working that morning, I would prepare both of my 1.5L of flasks by filling them with cold coffee which I have brewed a day prior for me to bring to work

Why 2 flasks? Well, one is not enough.

There are days when I’m feeling hungry or in the mood, I would prepare myself breakfast. My go-to-regular is frying egg mixed with mushrooms, chopped chilli and curry leaves and adding them to my breakfast sandwich. During my time being vegetarian, I would usually grill or air-fry my premixed tofu which I have marinated with spices, acting as a burger patty and my breakfast sandwich is prepared.

There are days, despite waking up earlier, I would still miss breakfast, thus instead I would pack it for work

After that is followed by showering and getting ready for work. I usually wash my hair in the mornings daily. Thus, prior leaving for work, I would dry my hair with a hair dryer and style it up in a bun and I’m good to go.

How about if I’m not working on that day or if I’m night shift for that day?

Usually I proceed with my usual cup of coffee or I would go the extra mile by brewing myself a pot of masala or ginger tea with the tv playing in the background of some random YouTube video on productivity, to which I’m usually not listening to and merely keeping it on in the background for some background noise.

Then, I would proceed to prepare my breakfast and start my day with some writing or studying.

Well, that’s my first hour for the day, or perhaps a little more than that.

What Are Your Morning Rituals? 🌄

I don't have any morning rituals because I'm not a creature of habit, which a lot of times is to my detriment. But the morning ritual I strive to achieve is to wake up at 6am. 6:00am: Waking up at 6 is kind of hard because I am really only woke once the sun hits my face, so thanks to daylight savings time, I'm screwed. But I usually start my "wake up" routine by using the bathroom (eh hem), watching some light news on GMA, feeding the cats and cleaning the litter pan. 6:15am: Yoga. It […]

WHISKERS IN MY FACE AND MEOWS! By Veronica Smith

What are my morning rituals? I would like to say that I get up at dawn to do my Qi Gong exercises but that is far from the truth! In reality, It is my aging bladder and my cats, which get me up of a morning! Once up, my routine is all about THEM!

“Meow! Meow! I want to be fed – Neow!”

So, I stagger to my feet, use the old-fashioned commode beside my bed (we don’t have en-suite bedrooms!), fling on my dressing-gown and shuffle to the cat feeding station. Three plates to be filled for three kitties, who wind themselves around my legs, while I open the wet-food pouch and divide the contents. I must place each plate in a different position, so that each cat gets their fair share.

Then there is the “Topping up the Cat Kibble” ceremony and the cleaning up of overnight kitty litter trays. Oh joy! Once fed, my furry masters want to go outside and bird-watch. So I act as Door-Person for them!

Having fixed up the cats, I can spend a few moments on myself. This time, I am emptying my own kitty litter tray (the commode!), having a wash, flinging on clothes covered in cat hairs, and hastily making the bed before a kitty with muddy paws decides to curl up on the pre-warmed sheets!

I usually put on a load of washing at this time, so that it can be hung outside to dry – provided that it is not raining or snowing!

Eventually, I make it to the kitchen to prepare breakfast. There is always one cat, who chances her paws, and demands a second breakfast of her own! No way, Miss Kitty!

Before I know it, the first hour (or rather hour and a half) of my day has slipped by and is merging with the rest of the post-breakfast chores. Perhaps it is my age but it seems like the ordinary routine jobs take up so much time that there aren’t enough hours left to do anything extra, like having FUN (an alien concept, as Mr. Spock would say)!

So that’s me and my morning rituals – and by the way, Happy April Fool’s Day!

Ah, mornings with a 2-year-old, the blend of early wake-up calls and the unseen joys of parenthood.

For me, these moments are less about the ungodly hour and more about the unscripted bliss that unfolds. My daughter played a pivotal role in my growth as a human, and is my hero. (so is her Mom, but this one goes out to our lil partner in crime! 😊)

Let’s set the scene: It’s the crack of dawn, a time when most of the neighborhood (and house) is still snoozing, and here we are, my daughter and I, embarking on our daily adventure. Full of excitement (and pee!)

The ritual then kicks off with the usual diaper change, a task that’s surprisingly become one of my cherished morning routines. There’s something about her sleepy “good morning” and the way she trusts me to help her start her day that keeps me going.

We navigate the stairs hand in hand, her tiny fingers wrapped around mine, stepping into the day together like a designated driver and their groggy roommate.

An idea of what our morning “walks” look like. (once i hit my goal weight of couse)

Our destination? The living room, transformed into our morning sanctuary, where Curious George or Scooby-Doo awaits to take us on the day’s first adventure. (and a broken toe or two from me stepping on cars)

Breakfast is served amidst the animated chatter, not from just the TV, but from the tiny little character that we brought into this movie.

She’s learning the fine art of spoon-wielding, (she knows how to use a spoon but now- it’s a magic wand!) It’s a sight that fills me with pride and an urge to capture every attempt, every giggle, and every little spark of imagination that she shares with us.

These moments, simple in their execution but profound in their impact, have become the highlights of my days.

They remind me that while everything in life is fleeting, joy can always be found in the here and now, especially in the company of my daughter. It’s in these early hours, before the rest of the world stirs, that I find myself absorbing every second, knowing all too well how quickly I’ll be helping her pack her bags and move on in her journey before I can catch my breath.

An idea of what our breakfast look like.

While the concept of ‘cherishing every moment’ might sound like a line straight out of a mommy facebook group, it’s grounded in a truth that’s hard to ignore.

Life, with its endless cycle of highs and lows, rarely gives us moments of pure, unadulterated joy. Yet, here they are, packaged in our morning routines, filled with cartoons, breakfast, and the best company I could ask for.

So, here’s to the mornings, to Curious George and Scooby-Doo, to breakfast shared on a tiny table, and to the tiny hands that make waking up at dawn worth every second.

I challenge you to take hold of those moments, be kind to your past self, and remember the joy that this world can bring when you are feeling that all is lost.

Share that unadulterated joy in every way you can. Don’t ever stop believing in happiness. It’s the most powerful thing in the world, and your enemies hate it.

Because while the days might be long, & the years are indeed short, I wouldn’t trade these moments for the world.

Since having gastric bypass surgery I have been very reliant on routine. I feel completely out of sorts if I don’t follow a specific routine on a day to day basis. I was never like that before the surgery, but since I have become a creature of routine. I’m weird like that now.

I get up, put some clothes on, grab my laptop, and head to the cellar. I pick something to watch, a TV show or a movie or a queue of youtube videos. Today is was the season (series?) finale of The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live. I then jog (pronounced yog) in place for 45 minutes. That closes my Apple Watch Activity app’s exercise ring for the day and it also sort of wakes me up. It kicks my ass too, but it gives me a little sense of accomplishment to start the day. After that it depends on whether it’s a work in the office day or not. If it is not then I eat breakfast and that closes out the first hour of my day. If it is, I prefer to have my breakfast in the car on the way to work so I just head upstairs and take a shower or pack up my computer and my lunch/breakfast and all of that.

I do this seven days a week. Any day that I don’t do it is a mess, mentally speaking. Like I said, I am weird like that now. It’s a whole new world, I guess.
