Thomas Taylor, Anglican priest, says the rich man (Dives) from Luke 16 suffered because of neglect of the poor, which is to be expected next to fine dining. He immediately jumps to pastors needing to be able to endure hunger.

Why the connection?

And what of Taylor’s claim that concentratations of luxurious eating correlate to neglect of the poor. Is this true of our vacation spots today?

Charles Spurgeon, London Baptist preacher, on casting thy bread. He says we are to do good to the unthankful and evil. Teach the careless and obstinate. Unlikely waters may cover a soil that was hoping for help or attention.

I remember some saying if a mission event hands out food and you don’t get converts, that was a waste. Spurgeon, in contrast, nowhere shall our labor be in vain.
